"Peigne (Comb) is an iron comb similar to those used by the Cubists to paint fake wood, and bearing the date of Duchamp’s choice of it: February 17, 1916. In French, the name of the object reads as the name of the impossible necessity of painting. The verb peindre (to paint) can no longer be conjugated in the indicative, but is alluded to in the subjunctive: que je peigne! In French, this verbal mode also acts as an imperative; its best translation would be something between “I ought to paint” and “If only I could paint.” The pun in Peigne, its genius, is that it acknowledges and quotes the name of painting as at once necessary and impossible.

A lot of immersive digital art seems to aspire to this: "Hues buoyantly inflate and disperse the molecules of pigment into evanescent, orchidaceous shards or drifts that bathe the eye in a sensuous effulgence that is now almost combustion-like in effect." (Max Kozloff in Artforum, 1967)

It's a long time since it was the best plan listen to middle-aged inhabitants of NY in an attempt to keep up with radical chic (or the insights and attitudes of the Downtown scene etc). This is the disappointing thing about Roni Horn: she's a bona fide NY art world participant, but not interesting.

Local bookshop doesn't really get "merchandising". It's perpetually full of stacks of recently delivered books. This was the front window on Saturday – it's often full of books, but the level of attention to appearance is consistent. They have no idea what impression they're giving. Self-absorbed
Window of bookshop. The display shelves are bare except for a Dolly Parton book, a Nigel Farage book, and "Best in Travel 2027". There are two photocopied "No Pokémon Cards" signs.

Counterfactual thinking centers on insights into what might have been different if some details of the past had been altered. These insights are a common feature of the mental landscape, and past research has long linked them to emotional experience. The first generation of counterfactual research in psychology assumed that such thoughts are dysfunctional; that is, instances of error, bias, or difficulty in coping (Gleicher et al., 1990; Kahneman & Tversky, 1982; Landman, 1987; Macrae, 1992; Miller et al., 1990; Miller & McFarland, 1986; Sherman & McConnell, 1995). The second generation of research, dating from the 1990s (and forming the bulk of this article), pointed to a functional perspective, in which counterfactual thinking serves a largely beneficial function of behavior regulation (Johnson & Sherman, 1990). Working on a job, dining with friends, conversing with acquaintances, studying for exams, mapping out finances for retirement: All such daily acts require planning, management, organization, and frequent course correction. Problems are inevitable. Accidents happen, glitches arise, and people struggle to fix what has blocked the road to their desires. Counterfactual thoughts do sometimes bring bias or difficulty in coping, but balanced against this cost is a larger benefit in terms of the coordination of daily behavior. Counterfactual thinking connects directly to course correction, to goal cognition, and to behavior regulation. As data from imaging studies in cognitive neuroscience continue to accumulate, we hope that this summary of the functional theory of counterfactual thinking can serve as a useful framework with which to understand them.

This conversation is similar to the story around the invention of rigid designators. It's not that any events/phenomena, in parallel universes, necessarily or metaphysically correspond to each other (I don't believe that they ever do), but for practical purposes you have to use the "same" names.

School years should be about, among other things, healthily broadening the pupils' horizons. So it's incomprehensible to me that a secondary school with an impoverished set of clubs / after-school activities would think a bridge club was a good move. This is what happened in my school in the 90s.

Something weaselly about saying "There's so much money in it [fashion]". I mean, to say there's money in something is a piece of practical advice, but the statement seems to blur that with the luxury aspect of the business: you're seeing money go past everyday, which isn't the same thing at all.
