🍂 A trip up Crabbe Mountain, west of Fredericton, is a reminder of just how spectacular autumn can be in New Brunswick. I can’t remember the colous being this vibrant in years. If you’ve been waiting for the perfect fall foliage, this might just be the year to soak it all in. 🍁

A couple shots from this afternoon. The Jewelweed was exceptionally busy with pollinators. Dozens of bees and wasps and a couple hummingbirds for good measure too. Found this beetle on a milkweed plant. #nature #eastcoastkin #wildflowers #pollinators #bugs #newbrunswick #Canada

There was a feeding frenzy this morning. A large flock of Evening Grosbeaks. This was just a small portion of the larger group. They emptied the feeder of seeds in a matter of minutes. 🪶

Bluebirds are already nesting in New Brunswick. This seems very early. Last year there were reports of some chicks not surviving a mid May cold snap.🪶

The hummingbird arrival is running a couple weeks early this year. They've already been sighted as far north and east as Washington County, Maine. Unfortunately there's a cold snap coming. 😬

Here is the radar out of Buffalo, New York from late Friday evening. This isn't rain, it's migrating song birds. Incredible to see. 🪶

Some species officially bid us farewell this year. They may have long been gone, but following more recent assessments, they’re now formally categorized as extinct on the IUCN Red List, considered…

A look at our Saint John River at Pokiok, prior to the #Mactaquac Dam being constructed. All of this is under many feet of water now. It's a shame we can't let the river flow free once again - especially given the dam's questionable (and expensive) future. #newbrunswick #Canada

Our utility company is frustrating. We have trees draped over the powerlines due to ice buildup. I called in today and they said "we'll send someone in 5 days to look at it...and cut it within 30 days if its deemed a risk. 😳

DNR came and shot this poor thing tonight while she was out having a drink along the shoreline. She's been wandering around the area for the past month, not hurting a thing. Such a waste. I can't imagine they fished her out of the water, either. Sickens me.

Both white breasted and red breasted nuthatches have been coming to the feeders. I put out peanuts this week and noticed they were storing them under the shingles on the roof. 🪶

I've always wanted to see a Tufted #Titmouse. Low and behold, one showed up to the feeders this week. Similar to Cardinals, which were a rare sighting in New Brunswick up until the last 5 years, titmice are becoming far more common. 🪶

Closed down Lakeland Ridges for another season this past weekend. The water level in the lake is exceptionally low due to the drought. Re-located a Wood Duck house and found a furry resident hiding in the wood shavings inside. 🐭 #NewBrunswick #Canada

We lost the remaining leaves on the trees this week with a wind and rain storm. Everything is grey, brown, and bleak. Coupled with the sun now setting an hour earlier, it sure takes some getting used to. I can't say I'm a fan. It all seemed to come at once this year.

Just whipped up the Bow Tie Pasta Bake I saw on Kitchen Curious 🍝 — creamy, cheesy, and surprisingly tangy thanks to the kraut. All Spice added a unique twist. Definitely southern comfort food. Next time? I’ll dial back the sauerkraut so the beef and cheese can shine more #DinnerWin #FoodExperiment

We went to an estate sale today. It's always interesting (maybe a little sad) to get a glimpse into the lives of strangers who have passed and try to piece together their hobbies, interests, and activities. Picked up this 2008 book about the historic flooding of the Saint John River Valley.

In just a day, volunteers found hundreds of birds that crashed into GTA buildings About 2,000 birds have died in the GTA in the last month flying into buildings, says group trying to help buff.ly/DOJTxzg #Birds #Urban #Architecture #Migration #Society
A puddle with a refelection of a highrise in it. Laying beside the puddle is a dead bird. Text is: Some municipalities in the GTA have policies in place to mitigate the risk of bird deaths, but they often leave out private property and existing buildings. (Submitted by Fatal Light Awareness Program)You can have fun with your windows patterns as long as they are on the outside of the window and the lines are close enough together (see the recommended standards), These windows have lovely patterns of birds in nature. Text is: Visible patterns on glass can help deter birds from windows. Reflective glass can confuse birds by reflecting surrounding greenery, causing collisions and often death. Glacial lakes have no shortage of boulders, and East Grand Lake on the border between #Maine and #NewBrunswick is no exception. The rock on the left is as big as a small house, and the one on the right isn't much smaller. The further one is in 15 to 20 feet of water, to give an idea of size.

STAY THE COURSE: Longer range guidance continues to suggest warmer-than-average temperatures for much of the U.S. & Canada (minus the West) into the second half of October. Cold & winter are coming, but there are no immediate signs just yet.
