Buckminster Fuller July 12, 1895 – July 1, 1983

"It is now highly feasible to take care of everybody on Earth at a higher standard of living than any have ever known. It no longer has to be you or me. Selfishness is unnecessary. War is obsolete. It is a matter of converting the high technology from weaponry to livingry."

- R. Buckminster Fuller

Canyonlands I and II. A geographic allegory about isolation. Canyonlands National Park has three sections separated by steep, dramatic canyons and water. Trying to visit all of them in one trip is very challenging by land (but trivially easy if you travel by water).

Painting of an abstracted landscape with a mix of top-down and ground level perspective. There is a (top-down perspective) river bisecting the scene. The path & shape of the river is based on the Green River upstream of its confluence with the Grand River in the heart of Canyonlands National Park. In the middle, there is a figure sitting by the river, covering her face with her arm in way that suggests grief. Colors are mostly pinkish and bluish with bright white highlights that are glossier than the background.

Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.

I will dispose of the first myth as quickly as possible. The “secret” is skill. If you haven’t learned how to do something, the people who have may seem to be magicians, possessors of mysterious secrets. In a fairly simple art, such as making pie crust, there are certain teachable “secrets” of method that lead almost infallibly to good results; but in any complex art, such as housekeeping, piano-playing, clothes-making, or story-writing, there are so many techniques, skills, choices of method, so many variables, so many “secrets,” some teachable and some not, that you can learn them only by methodical, repeated, long-continued practice — in other words, by work.

📌41 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence owned slaves, including its author. You can shrug this away that they were simply white, privileged men of their times if it makes you feel better. What you cannot say is that their terrible sin isn't still poisoning us 250 years later.
