I tried to make a heat map from the @cyclingscotland.bsky.social data counters, but instead of a heat map of bikes it's just a heat map of counters.
A greyscale map of Inverness. Some parts of the road network are highlighted in red and orange around areas where traffic counters replaced in the city. It tells you nothing about where people are riding bikes in the city.

I was thinking about how pre-registration for clinical trials has been useful in encouraging honesty with data so decided to have a go at it with road safety stats: themodeshift.scot/posts/2026-0...

✅ They've had to use a slightly unintuitive design for the car counts / bike counts graphs. The caption does a good job of explaining why and aiding interpretation. I think it will be fun to do a blog post on this to pick apart the detail.

✅ A methodology section! ✅ Unit discipline on Clyde St / Garscube Rd / Victoria Rd comparison. All get counts, % change and mode share to make comparisons easier.

✅ Links to the primary sources of data. I can take a look for myself or even try and replicate their findings ✅ Headline numbers are paired with comparisons: eg York Place: 4.7% modal share, "up from 2.1% in May 2021"

My own personal bias aside (more people on bikes - hooray!) this is also a really great example of data reporting. Here's some reasons why:

Inverness Courier - Bad 20mph Stats – The Mode Shift

I've written to the Courier with some concerns as well as Tim Eagle MSP quoted in the article. A more detailed rebuttal of the article should appear tomorrow on Scotland's Favourite Inverness Based Active Travel Stats Blog™.

(There are other questions I have about this article, such as what on earth 20mph limits have to do with dualling the A96, but I'm not sure answering those is in my skillset).

It seems like some nerd with a copy of R should have a look at the numbers to see what's up.

🚩 Why does the article compare the total number of collisions at 20mph with only the more serious collisions in a collection of other speed limits? 🚩 Why no mention of 30mph or 60mph roads?

🚩 The article reports that the 'crash' statistics are published by the Scottish Government. They're reported by the UK Government in the STATS19 reports. 🚩 The article doesn't link to any of the statistics it quotes.

Something doesn't seem right in the way the collision data is reported in this article: www.inverness-courier.co.uk/news/20mph-s... Some read flags:

New figures released by the Scottish Government show 570 collisions on 20mph roads across Scotland ended in injury last year.
