Men at Arms by Terry Pratchett
The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example.... A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars.
But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. ... But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

#FaveLineFriday A bit of worldbuilding. Nothing really hard hitting this week
Lyn raised a skeptical eyebrow at Leo, "Where did you pick her up?"

"Long story..." While he was thinking of a way to explain the concept, Lyn filled the
void.

"That's what people eat in the slums. It's funny all the things your brain can make you believe. There was this old concept in medicine called a placebo where they would tell people they were treating their disease but only give them some salt water, but because they believed they were being treated and still got better."

Sophia's frown deepened. Leo could see her trying to piece things together. "So... they lie to people that they're eating food, and then their brains make that look like food." Smart girl.

"Yes, but it takes more than that... they send orders to your grey. It makes the lie easier, visual overlay, releasing chemicals to stimulate taste receptors, to make you think you smell the spices that aren't there." There was a hardness in her voice, not uncommon when Leo talked to people on his rounds, but she tried to cover it with a smile.

#FaveLineFriday I didn’t get as much done as I wanted, but I think there was some good stuff done
Forcing a smile, she pointed towards a fancy looking whiskey near the top shelf, "On the
rocks please."
To his credit, he hid the doubt on his face well. She was good for it, at least for tonight. Tomorrow... she would worry about that tomorrow. It had just been one of those fucking days.

#WIPSnip For necessary context, this is following a scene where the girls’ group tried to go independent and were met with a violent response from fans
Lyn could still smell the blood through miasma of cigar smoke. The cut wasn't deep, but it had taken an hour before her tears got all of it out of her eye. She coughed on the smoke as her manager got in the back of the agency limo. Some might have called Mr. Moreau handsome with his hard face and modest physique. The mustache would have ruined it for her if it needed to. Fortunately, she had no such delusions. He sat down across from her and opened a beer with a loud crack that cut through the awkward silence of the car, spilling ash from the edge of his cigar on Desta's skirt. Lyn felt Ana's hand tighten around hers from the seat next to her.

"Well," he dragged out, "That was quite a show out there, ladies." His hand reached
around Desta's shoulder, and she tried to hide a shudder. "It's just... no one told me about any of this. He shouted to the front, "Let's get going already Bruno," and the engine sputtered to life.

Lyn knew this would be coming, but she'd hoped she would be on the other side of it with a successful concert to show for Heavens Fall to back her case. The wind was in her face, but some| fights there's no running from, and she wanted this, all three of them wanted this so
badly.

My cyberpunk’s still in the first draft, but currently: “God is dead” Because what I want to explore in it is how religion operates and adapts within hyper capitalism and the entertainment industry
God is dead. The words flashed across the TV screen hanging above the bar. Some ad for a new game, Aylan thought absently, too engrossed in his beer to really care. He’d hear all about it from the kids next door, through the paper thin walls of his apartment. The reality of the statement wasn’t something he really questioned. It just was. God is dead. Water is wet. Rent is due. It was background noise, those facts of life you don’t think about when you’re not three beers deep at some cheap bar that doesn’t even sell real food.

Wrote a bit for the freelance assassin in my cyberpunk story #writingcommunity #writingsnips
Natalia had always hated the phrase 'the arc of history trends towards justice.' All she ever saw history trend to was more history. Justice was an afterthought if anything at all. No, justice was something you had to grip the knife and carve yourself. By the time history deigned to get around to it, the bastards would be long gone, just for new ones to take their place. Justice wasn't waiting for all the cash to drain away while they grew fat on it, sitting in an alley eating synthetic noodles while they drank the night away at palaces in the sky. Justice was the cold iron she stared down the sights of, no matter what history might say.

So it’s been a bit since I finished The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, but this bit won’t leave my head #booksky
“There is a crime here that goes beyond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success. The fertile earth, the straight tree rows, the sturdy trunks, and the ripe fruit. And children dying of pellagra must die because a profit cannot be taken from an orange. And coroners must fill in the certificate- died of malnutrition- because the food must rot. The people come with nets to fish for potatoes in the river, and the guards hold them back; they come in rattling cars to get the dumped oranges, but the kerosene is sprayed. And they stand still and watch the potatoes float by, listen to the screaming pigs being killed in a ditch and covered with quick-like, watch the mountains of oranges slop down to a putrefying ooze; and in the eyes of the people there is failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there is wrath. In the soul of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage”

Coppers liked to say that people shouldn't take the law into their own hands, and they thought they knew what they meant. But they were thinking about peaceful times, and men who went around to sort out a neighbor with a club because his dog had crapped once too often on their doorstep. But at times like these, who did the law belong to? If it shouldn't be in the hands of the people, where the hell should it be? People who knew better? Then you got Winder and his pals, and how good was that?
