Just listened to this episode. Wonderful breakdown of feminist criticism of Tolkien’s texts and @aranelparmadil.bsky.social has me SO excited for the future of feminist and queer readings of the works of Tolkien. Highly suggest giving this a listen! Thanks for this, @podcast.athrabeth.com 🖤

For Black History Month, did you know that one of our foundational Tolkien scholars is a Black woman? Melanie Rawls wrote "The Feminine Principle in Tolkien" (1984), among THE seminal works on women and Tolkien. She's written on JRRT and Ursula Le Guin among others and is a fantasist herself.

The writer and Tolkien scholar Melanie Rawls, an African American woman in a blue button-up shirt, glasses with thick black rims, and a dapper fedora.

The article "The Feminine Principle in Tolkien" by Melanie Rawls, published in Mythlore 38 (Spring 1984). Above the title and author, a pen-and-ink drawing depicts three powerful women from Tolkien's mythology.

we can count that I guess! lol. Tolkien only really used his monogram for his artwork, so since his art is the cover, the monogram is technically on the book. But his monogram only started to be used on his books (separate from a signature for his art) shortly after his death in early 80’s 🙂

A little insight into the symbol you see on most Tolkien books! It’s Tolkien’s monogram and has been used on his books since the early 80’s! #tolkien

The Hobbit taught us that Dragons who hoard gold at the expense of the well being of others will have their undoing by even the smallest person. We're meant for more in this world, for good food, cheer, and a comfortable life.

Thinking about reading the Lord of the Rings …and then rereading it, then trying The Silmarillion like 3 times before finishing it & then listening to podcasts & taking online Tolkien classes & writing papers & reading Tolkien’s expansive works, and basically making LotR my entire personality??? Idk

we can see his prose, poetry and art all conceptualizing a lost childhood and a long forgotten past. These works evoke a time of magic and myth and an overall yearning for the past that—for those who open their mind enough to look for it—can awaken a magic within oneself in the ordinary day to day.

In this early work we see Tolkien preoccupied with the idea of an ancient, untouchable past that inspired a longing for what once was. If we look at his creative work during these years (from The Book of Lost Tales to some of his early poetry and artwork), we can see…

In 1915 Tolkien was just 23 years old, engaged to the love of his life, Edith and had a head full of ancient tales, poetry and myths. His conception of Middle-earth as we know it today was still far off, but the seeds of his legendarium were sprouting… #tolkien
