Failed. I failed.

The thought hits him before the ground does. Stone cracks his arm, blooming pain all through him, but it's nothing compared to the excruciating drag of the hungry void creature reaching through the torn veil of the gate to feed from him.

And another, and another.

Voices shout in panic behind him, orders to retreat to the secondary gate, to call for the other god-regent.

They're leaving me behind. They're leaving me here to die.

He knew they would; it's protocol. He slips in and out of consciousness, in too much pain and exhaustion to do more than whimper.

It's alright. The void creatures will devour him. He'll become part of the void too, until one day, maybe centuries later, another god-regent will cleanse him, and he'll be free.

For a moment he thinks he hears San's voice in the jumble of panicked voices, but writes it off as pathetic longing for his bodyguard, here in the one place San can't help him.

It's becoming quiet now as the guards retreat. Distant fighting, orders shouted, some kind of argument. None of his business anymore; all he has left to do is die.

Silence. Nothing but the whipping wind of the cliffside and the hissing hunger of the void as more and more creatures leech his life away. The pain twists his face as he curls into himself, not wanting to die, though he's always known he must. No god-regent lives past thirty. They all fall this way, eventually.

Suddenly, fire shoots above him. Not from the void gate, but toward it. The grabbing, leeching hands shrink away in agitation.

It doesn't make any sense. It makes less sense when he manages to open his eyes to see massive, scaled feet standing over him, glimmering a brilliant blue when fire shoots out of the creature again.

Maybe it's a dying hallucination. The pain is subsiding a bit as the void creatures shrink away from the fire breathing lizard creature above him. Maybe this is it, he thinks, the last few seconds of life, my brain giving up on pain to release me.

His eyes roll back in his head, his last thought being amusement that in the end, he dreamt of something as silly as a dragon saving him from death.

Moments later, he is not dead.
