Missing my grandparents tonight and so currently sipping a Sloe Gin Fizz and listening to schmaltzy Jackie Gleason albums.

Genuinely concerned about what's happening to the space-time continuum in this toilet.

Can anyone answer for me? Is wearing black part of the ritual? Or is this just because it’s New York?

Christa Pike committed heinous acts. But it doesn’t follow that the State must then also commit heinous acts.

It’s so typical of US culture right now that Schmitt is far more willing to concede that he failed to spring his cynical perjury trap than to admit a woman corrected his sports knowledge.

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

I am in no danger of believing that my toilet is sentient. I know perfectly well it’s a simple mechanism, and nothing to do with “thinking.“ But this is a perfectly human mode of expression. We worry too much, in my opinion.

Folks act like anthropomorphizing AI is a problem, but it’s just normal human language habits and NBD. My partner told me that our toilet wasn’t re-filling after flushing, and my first spoken thought was “Hm, I guess if the float valve is stuck, then the toilet thinks it’s already full.”

Then my brain goes to, well, what if he is an AI? He appears to be a 100% self-interested entity with zero scruples. The exact model of rampant AI gone amok that we’ve seen in SciFi for decades.

I have often had nightmarish thoughts, like, what if we foolishly give AI control of the nuclear codes? Then I admit to asking myself how much worse could that be than the person who actually does have that control right now?

Call it the No True Scotsman fallacy if you want, but I will die on this hill: bad artists will make bad art and good artists will make good art. If you are critical of a genre, medium, context, or technique prior to experiencing the actual work of any specific artist, you have it backwards.

say what you will about the myriad valid concerns with current LLMs but I personally will never get over the fact that Aaron Swartz was prosecuted to his literal death for downloading JSTOR and then a decade later, they downloaded & ingested the entire world and our IP laws just went ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just a reminder that the linked article does point out that Republicans went down this path first, in case anyone following this thread gets the impression it’s just a Democratic problem. We do so love our circular firing squads. (It’s horrible regardless of which side does it.)

If I may pop in to add to this. Stock photo websites already figured this out by allowing users to pay for credits. These news sites could let people just buy a set number of credits and then read whatever articles they want, when they want, until their credits run out. But that's asking too much

I’m no money expert, but I recall that in the days of print media, one could buy a single issue of anything. Subscribing was for a few select publications. The requirement to subscribe to everything is unsustainable for most folks. Give me this week’s issue for $3 or something.

I first saw the butter items about a year ago in a museum shop in Washington DC. There were butter socks and butter scarves, tied in to a related exhibit at the museum. Thought it was a one-off, but now they’re everywhere.

I’m all in favor of vigorous discourse on the Arts, but 80% of the folks pontificating on the Odyssey right now just sound like “here are the objective Rules for Art, and artists who don’t follow them suck.” Embarrassing.
