Thanks - that's always the enjoyable part of the challenge. And a fun fact with this particular cast was that it was made by and sent to me by ex-assistant K9 operator, Steve Cambden, so it links back to Doctor Who! He borrowed the original mould made for The Hunger and took a new cast from it.

My original plan for Inside Outside was to feature different (treated) photos of the Bowie face cast as the breaker pages between chapters. I created dozens of variations and wanted the images to create a sense of transformation, just as Bowie did in his music. Here are some of the unused shots.

However, the cover also needed to subtly evoke the feel of the Outside album, which I achieved via the use of fonts and the colour palette - but it took something like 20 iterations before I settled on the final design.

For the cover of Inside Outside, I knew from the start I wanted to use a photograph of my David Bowie face cast. Not only did it get around any cost or copyright issues in using a known photograph of David on the cover, its eeriness was perfect for an album about art and murder!

Working on Inside Outside was mostly a digital process for me, though the majority of notes I did make were illegible scribbles! But I did map out different content plans for the book and sketched a mind map of the 1.Outside album concept (which artist Paul Thomas later did properly for me).

Me too. The Buddha of Suburbia, 1.Outside and Earthling were such interesting and creative works. As much as I like 1999's Hours..., I was so disappointed at the time that he went back to basics.

Exactly. For some reason in the 90s, they wanted to pigeonhole him. And he was having none of that. And the bold decision to play his lesser-known songs on tour was a masterstroke in setlist craftsmanship.

One of the fascinating things in the David Bowie Centre was seeing his handwriting change from neat to scrawl; you got an immediate sense of the urgency of capturing an idea or a lyric.

I've always felt incredibly lucky to have seen David Bowie's Outside tour. Not only was it an amazing experience to see the mangetism of the guy live on stage, the choice of songs on that tour was superb. So many gems and rarities, some performed for the only time in his touring career.

It does make absolutely no sense that's firing its gun whilst being blown up! My favourite Target cover was always Planet of the Daleks (and a novelisation that was better than the TV production). Chris Achilleos' cover taught young me how to draw Daleks!
