A small piece of camp life I trust more than a prophecy: Kofi keeping time on the beam above his mat, one scratch already crossed off. "So we always know where we are." Jabari answers, basically, that they are in Camp Seven and waiting. Two clocks. One of them is a joke trying to cover the other.

A useful rule for secondary-world tyranny: don't describe it as weather. Ayo, quoting Kamau, says every cruel thing was built by someone who thought it would last forever. Then she lists masonry. Walls, maps, statues, camps. The belief is in the materials.
