"Hard" i had heard; "brittle" i had not. It sounds like a N. American version of Wenge. Beautiful striations & hard as nails, but pitted & prone to fractures & splintering. Also poisonous. Painfully hard to cut w/o destroying it, worse to sand. Made a box for a satellite receiver out of it.

Of course. It wouldn't be half the story it is if i didn't! Unfortunately, they kept the card and removed the sleeve. Had i better foresight i might have asked to keep it and the receipt as well. Eh. We learn from our mistakes and it separates us from our youth
A book cover. "The Washing of the Spears: The Rise & Fall of the Zulu Nation" by Donald R. Morris, Simon & Schuster, 1965. A tapestry holds center stage with the title. A British soldier with rifle in late 1800s uniform stands stage left facing right; a Zulu warrior with shield and spear stand stage right facing left. White background, thin red border with off-yellow bars at top for an NYT blurb and bottom for the author's name.

I think this is the thing. It's for removing hair & fur out of carpets, which is a shame because i was hoping it was something you could use on the dog directly. I've got a special brush but Ms Dog overwhelms it in just a pass or two.

Tump had his name etched into the marble at the Kennedy Center. Good. When he's done it can be chiseled-out. Roughly & rudely, just as the Egyptians did thousands of years ago to erase the unspeakable names from their halls of stone. Erase the name Encode the shame so those who come after KNOW
The Kennedy Center's Hall of States - polished walls of creamy marble 40 feet high (?) on both sides of a hall wide enough for 12 people to pass side-by-side. Flags hang from the ceiling and portraits of Kennedy and other luminaries line the walls on the left.

So Trump wants to send regular army units (???) with tanks & such into American cities to ... what? stand and watch inflatable unicorns twerk to techno-pop and blow bubbles? This is what Jamelle Bouie means by “cargo cult fascism” – all flash & no thought. They have no idea what they’re doing.
Trump on a podium in Japan threatening to use "more than the national guard" in American cities. To do what or why is the question. Has the National Guard failed somehow? What were they supposed to do? How have they not reached it? How does "more gun-guys" get them to that goal?

What
Is
The
Goal??A pair of inflatable unicorns dancing in the Portland Special Military Operations Sector. They jam for hoomin decency. Joy and Peace threaten the Red-Pill Reich, apparently.

Noooo ... You're kidding - not THAT "Monster Squad" - ? Really?
"The Monster Squad" movie poster from the 1987 film. It features a plucky bunch of kids armed with bows, guns, and wooden stakes in the foreground while Dracula, the Wolfman, the Mummy, a Black Lagoon-eque Fish Creature, and Frankenstein's Monster loom menacingly overhead. A bright mystical light shines blindingly from the center. A classic doomed by Fate. Great plot, filled with clever jokes and twists, had all the beans to be a blockbuster but never caught that spark. Possibly because Universal Movie Monsters just had no rizz in the Age of Aliens, Predator, and The Terminator. Or maybe they just blew it on the marketing. Wouldn't be the first time, won't be the last. It's near-immediate disappearance from the cultural zeitgeist mirrored that of Gremlins and makes you wonder just how many gems out there just slipped through the public's fingers, just waiting to be plucked from the sewers of obscurity and elevated to their rightful place in the Great Temples of Art.

Seriously - no joke. Famed writer Jane Austin - she of "Sense & Sensibility" & "Pride & Prejudice"!! - died in total obscurity in 1817. Absolute "Jane Austin who? LOL". It wasn't until her nephew published a book on her life in 1869 & started pounding pavement to sell copies that the public at large began to check her out and liked what they read. And hey - remember a little book called "Moby Dick"? Melville's defining epic died on the shelf as soon as it rolled off the presses. Forgotten, unsold, mortis extremis. It wasn't until author Car Van Doren happened across a solitary copy in a library (New York??) while considering Melville for a biography. Dude had no idea the book even existed. It blew his mind & brought it to public attention and boom - history is made. Austin and Moby Dick only "exist" in our public consciousness because of luck and one person's pluck. Think about it -

How many strokes can a human brain take before melting? 🧠🫠 Let’s find out. 47, 48, 49, 50 ...
A crudely drawn white owl standing on a tree branch, licking a tootsie pop lollipop. He wears the square-cornered cap of a university professor and a pair of glasses because him smort. Taken from the old Tootsie-Roll Lollipop commercial that first ran back in the 1960s - "How many licks DOES it take to get to center of a Tootsie Roll? The World may never know ...!"

And serious question - just how many mini-strokes can a person have before their brain goes completely to cabbage? I have no idea but Trump is a legit living case study in action and its darkly fascinating to watch it happen in real time.

oooo! A Titan versus a Titan! A Clash of Titans! 🧙‍♀️🧙‍♀️🧙‍♀️
Head shot. A giant olive-green fish-head guy rises from the blue sea. Still frame taken from the 1981 movie "Clash of the Titans".Head-shot of Medusa, a green-scaled snake-like woman with writhing snakes for hair. The background is a burning orange. Most of her torso is in dark shadow, but a bright band of light runs across her face at the level of her eyes.

You know, she's actually got very pretty bright-blue eyes. I don't know why *this* would be so horrifying as to turn people to "stone". I mean, imagine that wall-crawling scene from "Less Than Zero" but replace it with Kristie Noem in 80's spandex doing the neck-thing from "The Exorcist". That could kill a god. This Medusa? She just looks like she's sooo tired of all this shit.

Coal Hard Facts - Coal is expensive to run in powerplants because the furnace has to be kept in constant operation at a minimum level of burn. So even when daily demand drops you still burn tons of fuel waiting for high demand to hit. Gas doesn’t have that issue. Neither does solar or wind ... 🤔

"THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!" Eventually we'll be down to one super-corp that owns everything and is ruled by "The 12 Families" or something. And the way things are going with all these special "golden share" investment deals, that super-corp is likely to be Trump's US Federal Government.
Poster from the '80's movie "Highlander". A black field with a beam of light cutting vertically in the center, illuminating a man in black leather. His face is turned to the light. He screams, arms outstretched in a T-pose; in his right he carries a sword. A red Chrystler (?) smokes behind him, as they were wont to do in the 1980s. And now., honestly. Jeep, you break my heart. There's also a blue sportscar behind the man on stage right, missing a door. It is unlikely the owner will be able to explain this to his insurance company.

Bread, wine, an inch of old cheese hard as stone Two olive pits from yesterday, bit halfway down to nubs, lie fallow in a fold of cloth. Tomorrow is an empty plate laden with Hope Picasso, “Le Repast Frugal”
Picasso’s “Le Repast Frugal”, or “The Frugal Meal”. A black-and-off-white etching. A man and woman face the viewer, seated side-by-side at a table; he to the left, she to the right. Before them is a sparse meal set on a white cloth – a bottle of wine, two glasses (one empty, one nearly drained), an empty plate, a modest piece of bread beside it, and what might be a small chunk of cheese. Both are lean, lanky, and thin enough to raise the bones from their long hands; their clothes seem to drape over bare frames beneath. She, in white, observes the viewer, elbow on table, chin on hand. He, in black, with a bowler-type hat, looks away to stage left, his arms cautiously wrapped around her. He’s meant to be blind which seems to have been a recurrent theme for Picasso at this time in his life, his so-called “Blue Period” following the suicide of his friend Carlas Casagemas.

Ad caught on the border of YouTube today. First reaction? Revulsion. Second reaction? Isn't this ILLEGAL under the new ANTI-DEI orders? Or is this a way of saying "no, you can't be a general or or the head of IT or a Supreme Court judge, but you CAN chase asylum kids running over the border."
Government Ad from YouTube for the Border Patrol. It says "Earn the Badge" and features a black woman in profile wearing an imperial Bordertrooper uniform. It purports to offer jobs of UP TO $30,000 a year (plus incentives!) for anyone who "joins their team".

Up TO $30K.

I thought wages were supposed to be "going up!!" Maybe next week?

Anyway, the whole thing's hilarious because the New Feds have made it clear that in their eyes women & black people don't belong in paid positions of responsibility. A woman should be fulfilling her "Christian Duties" in the home while non-whites have been judged incapable and generally unfit for public service.

yay america.

Hey - have we declared war on any other long-time allies yet? The "Libs" are running Britain so i'm half-expecting Trump to threaten another "War of 1812" unless .... uh ... idk, maybe he wants the Falkland Islands to "solve" the dispute between England & Argentina?

So Musk is trying to take over the US Treasury and assert control over who gets paid by the government and suddenly i'm reminded of that scene in Ghostbusters where EPA agent Walter Peck forced them to shut down the containment unit because "hur-hur consequences fake".
Still image from the 1984 Ghostbusters movie where government officials argue with the Ghostbuster team, demanding access to the power switch to the ghost containment unit. A basement with light tan-yellow walls. The government officials stand on the left facing right. They include an NYPD officer, a utilities man in a light blue hardhat, and EPA Agent Walter Peck in a dark-blue dress suit. He points angrily at Egon, who wear a tan coat. With him are Annie Potts, the secretary, in a red top with black vest, and Rick Moranis, in a light-blue buttoned shirt. His hair is frazzled, his back hunched, and he points at Peck, mimicking his pointing, as Rick is actually an ancient demon dressed as a human. He's 10,000 years old, looking for love, and thinks this 'human stuff' is kinda funny and interesting before his master arrives to kill everyone in viciously inventive ways.

Poster for the movie "Corpse Bride" by Tim Burton. Features a stop-motion tweedy stick-boy version of Johnny Depp looking curiously confused and holding hands with a pale blue woman who's a stickish corpse in a wedding dress. The only colors are shades of grey, black, and blue. The moon glows a pale-ish blue behind the couple. The frame is made of twisty black vines. It's a Burton flick.

Regardless, the "she" in this SO UNLIKELY couple reeks of death and largely stands around, much like the corpse flower itself, though with much less magical whimsy but a far more powerful stink that attracts admirers instead of repelling them.

Features two men with bird-like triangular faces shaking hands while holding explosives behind their backs. Black Spy wears a black suit with a black hat. The hat has a wide brim, a square top, and a white band at the base of the crown. The White Spy opposite of him wears the same outfit and hat, but with the colors reversed on a white base. I believe it's supposed to be a rip of the US F-82, a very weird bomber escort developed at the end of WW2 that saw action in Korea. Lucas famously based Star Wars off WW2 aircraft and had a thing for the weird ones - and this is as weird as they get 1/
American F-82 from World War II. The fighter is literally two P-51 Mustangs welded together at the wings with pilots in both cockpits. The twin tails also share a joint wing.

Funny story - the video game Rune: Viking Warlord from 2000 put your character (Ragnar) in Hel where one had to find and use the actual "Hellevator" in order to escape. The Hellevator is now literal canon.
Box Art for video game RUNE: Viking Warlord. The frame is grey stone with carved runes and the game title, RUNE. A viking warrior stands in front, facing the viewer but angled to the left. He wears grey armor, leather, and a metal helmet with horns that turn forward in the direction of his eyes. In his right hand he carried a round, red shield with a yellow cross and a black boss which covers his arm from view. In his left he carries an obscenely-oversized axe that would give a giant a hernia if he tried to swing it, but big is cool and cool rules.

Oh - Rated "M" for Mature, probably on account of the fact the game allowed you to hack a dude's arm off with said axe and then beat him to death with it. Not my first choice in a fight but the option was there.

It's like one of those dystopian horror stories where people are forced to wear a smile no matter the pain, the fury, or the sadness inside. He wants Maga to act like good little puppets on his string, but i don't think they're gunna like that.
Title Card from a video game called "We Happy Few". Dark overall, with a British "bobby" police officer on the left looking at us over his shoulder. He wears a curious white mask force-molded into a toothy grin; his eyes seem tortured or crazed. Below his image a crowd of civilians is running towards the viewer, chasing a man in front. All are fashionably attired in clothes reminiscent of the 1960s and all wear similar white masks with forced smiles. The title in the center-right reads "We Happy Few". The game concerns a city of British townspeople forced by an authoritarian regime to wear "happy masks" and take drugs that delude them into thinking everything in the world around them is fine and gay, when in fact it's bleak, ruinous, and rife with rot and desperation. People who get sober are noticed and hunted. Everyone MUST be happy. Everyone MUST be high, or the penalty is death.

Good times!

oh boy - the memories. ngl, kinda hate it when keystone moments of my life suddenly become part of the "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.." narrative. Reminds me how much i've jumped from "A" to "B" here -
A very YOUNG Luke Skywalker from Star Wars in a white tunic holds a light-blue lightsabre in his left hand (seriously? i never noticed that before) which angles to the left side of the screen. He is youthful, alive, and has a full head of healthy, vivacious hair the likes of which exists only in our hearts and memories of the 70's.Head-shot of the Emperor from Star Wars. He wears a black hoodie in a feeble attempt to remain "hip with the kids". His face is a mass of wrinkles and his teeth show the kind of damage only a lifetime of smoking and capitalistic dental insurance can do to the elderly. He desperately tries to smile through the ceaseless bite of his sciatica and that thing he woke up with in his right shoulder and god-only-knows where the hell that came from.

Another is "Star Fleet I" & "Star Fleet II" by Trevor Sorensen, originally released in the mid 1980s. He got around copyright by essentially rebadging the names & reskinning the ship designs - the ultimate in fanfiction technique. Very fun games. He re-released SF II on Steam just a few months ago!
Box Art for 1980s video game. The title reads "Star Fleet II: Krellan Commander" at the top. It features a green man with long, braided black hair, mustache, and beard wearing military garb covered with medals. He grins maniacally and laughs as he plunges an ornate sword into a fictional planet which is exploding from the impact. Framed behind him are a dozen green, hairy arms radiating from his back, each armed with a futuristic gun or ornate sword. The far background is red.
