The Doolough tragedy took place in Mayo in 1849. Poor applying for 'relief' in Louisburgh were told Poor Law officers were not in the town & were instead at a hunting lodge at Delphi. The poor were forced to walk over the mountains for 'inspection', 17 ppl died on return journey

In 1922, about 20% of Dubliners were middle class, many living in suburbs, connected by rail and tram to the centre, but c.35% of Dublin’s families lived in one room tenements, with mortality rate of 23.1 % compared to 18% in Belfast, 14% in London. theirishstory.com/2019/04/03/d...

Dublin city, bounded by its two canals, had a population of about 320,000 in 1922. Add in the suburbs, which had been inching outwards along the new railway lines since the mid 19th century and the urban area was home to over half a million people.
