What a long, strange trip it's been....

Hoyer tells him offense is a pretty sure known, as is defense for the most part. Invest in that. Pitching is wildly random; treat it like VC. I'll get the team to the playoffs, and then luck takes over. Tom makes an acceptable ROI. Rinse and repeat. #Cubs

The problem is, not only does Tom agree w/ Hoyer's approach, as it appeals to his conservative financial perspective, it's unlikely he has the slightest idea who would be capable and available to remake the org. #Cubs

The #Cubs don't have a viable replacement for either corner OF position. Hartshorn *might* be a 2028 candidate for LF. Suzuki is a known quantity, improved defensively, and established w/ PCA. Pay the man. It's independent of the pitching woes, which Hoyer is going to fu anyway.

Excellent proposal. But, of course, it's contingent on the owners fucking the players over on their compensation. So, no.

Final Top100. Dodgers have 3 in top 20, MIL 2. We have to go to #35 to find a #Cubs, and again to 88 to find the 2nd. Both are offense, one might be a catcher, the other might be able to grow into Happ. No pitching. Developmental failure all around. www.mlb.com/milb/prospec...

He's not casting doubt on the moon landing. What he's doing is casting doubt on whether he's got an IQ above a lineman's number.

This is a result of expanding the playoffs, letting .500ish teams in, and making 2/3 of the field survive a best-of-3. And, no team starts w/ a best-of-7. In baseball. It's a stupid way to conduct a championship process.

The only Shota question is whether to bet the prop he'll be in the top 3 in HRs allowed. His entire approach is lob it up there and hope it doesn't leave the yard. Hard pass, and no QO, because he'll take it again. #Cubs

"These fans deserve home playoff games." Tom demands home playoff games. That's what Hoyer is really going to have to answer for. He's had 6 seasons. He's got 2025 he can point to, and the #Cubs were fortunate to get by the Padres. But that's all he has to show for well over a billion $$ in payroll.

The Grateful Cub @thegratefulcub.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Also true of Cabrera. And they shredded Boyd's arm last season. And they gambled Shota wouldn't take the QO and lost. For an org w/ so much money to spend and presenting themselves as such high-level process pros, it has absolutely no idea how to develop a successful, resilient pitching program.
020
The Grateful Cub @thegratefulcub.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The organization also hasn't created a successful SP pipeline. Every team has pitching injuries, w/ plenty of season-ending ones to go around. If your org doesn't have budding SP in the minors pushing to move up, it gets the 2026 #Cubs rotation. Pitching, in general, is completely broken.

The Grateful Cub @thegratefulcub.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
But the O isn't the problem; it's the pitching. It should be a case-by-case evaluation, and because the #Cubs can't seem to develop MiLBs into legit MLB ones, they have to buy. A refusal to pay is how they wind up with Joc Pederson. No worries - Hoyer isn't signing SS regardless.

?? Suzuki put up a 5.1 bWAR, 3rd on #Cubs. OPS+ of 131 was 2nd. OF D much improved. Keep him, drop Happ, & find a young bat for LF that can grow like Happ did. The pattern that needs to be broken is the abject failure that surrounds pitching. It's a completely clueless org on this side of the ball.

The Grateful Cub @thegratefulcub.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The only player on that list who needs to be retained is Suzuki. And Hoyer won't pay him. But, we'll all get to hear how oh-so-close he came!

Yeah, 2003 was awesome - right up until the whole Barman fiasco and Dusty's failure to change the narrative. At least this season CC didn't decide to pick fights w/ the media and egg his players on to pile on. #Cubs

Since 2000? Are we forgetting the Dusty failures? 2003 when he doesn't bother to call a TO and go settle his team down? 2004 when he decides to pick a very public fight w/ the media and winds up missing the playoffs? Baker still really pisses me off, and not just about this. #Cubs

Well, sure. Isn't that the point of how the WC series is structured? More playoff games for revenue, but a big thumb on the scale to reward regular season performance. The WSox overcame. Philly at least made it a tussle. What the #Cubs did goes far beyond just short series/away randomness.

The Grateful Cub @thegratefulcub.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
He's another player that really calls into question #Cubs coaching and development. He hit LHP better than RHP, so you can't blame it on not platooning him. The more I look at the entire franchise, big picture, the more I'm convinced its programs are fatally flawed.

The Grateful Cub @thegratefulcub.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It's concerning, but his practice ethic is top-notch. And thank goodness he was there when Swanson went down. Also, fwiw, he was easily the WC series #Cubs MVP, pretty much the only player who showed up. Suzuki was passable - barely. The rest? Making tee times since they were already in SoCA.

The Grateful Cub @thegratefulcub.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Also, they suck at development and are reluctant to pay until they're forced to admit they simply don't have enough at a position. Look how long it took to fix 3B. For Hoyer, Happ is good enough. And he'll probably pay him before Suzuki, which would be so on-brand. #Cubs

Remember what an adventure it was when he first moved to the OF from 2B, usually in CF to start? Oy vey! He's come a very, very long way, and mucho props to him for making the most of what he was given. #Cubs

The Grateful Cub @thegratefulcub.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The problem is that games aren't decided by aggregate performance. The #Cubs don't get to bank the extra runs when they blow up mediocre pitching on teams mailing it in. And once again, this blind spot shows up in the playoffs.
010
The Grateful Cub @thegratefulcub.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Strongly disagree. Over the previous 4 seasons, since taking 2B full-time, he's averaged 5.3 (AS-level) bWAR. And he backs up SS w/out losing defense, and it's easier to fill 2B. Yeah, this season was a head-scratcher. But one wonders if this is more signs of #Cubs systems issues than just him.

The Grateful Cub @thegratefulcub.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
He's worked his ass off to get to where he is, and had another solid defensive year in LF, maybe good enough for another GG. But his league-average OPS+ suggests his bat is seeing him on the wrong side of his performance curve, and not worth FA money at 32. #Cubs

The Grateful Cub @thegratefulcub.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Nico steps up as the series #Cubs MVP. Goes .500/.500/.625/1.125. The rest of the lines are downright embarrassing. The top three batters went hitless and barely even got on base. A pitching staff of nothing but Jake Arrietas at his prime couldn't overcome that performance.
