So every "my bot hacked this" or "my bot will eradicate a million jobs" or "my bot is a movie star" story is about grabbing more investment and getting a higher IPO valuation. Is the damage real? Yes, probably. But is it also likely overhyped for cynical reasons? Also yes, probably.

Ultimately at least one of these companies will fail badly and be absorbed by the others becuase thats broadly how the sector works. Its not managed to make a product that is sold by a profitable company, its managed to eat VC money until you get to an Exit where all the execs get huge bonuses.

Not to underplay some of the threat and damage it can do but there is an interest in making it look like the biggest game changer ever and that interest is served by stories of how powerful it is.

All "AI does something scary" stories need to be read with the knowledge that these companies are massively loss making and over extended and need constant inflows of cash based on how powerful and capable their tech is.

The current Tory offering seems to be laser focused on "people who earn over £100k and stand to inherit a big house and are kinda racist but not super racist and don't speak to normal people that aren't staff" and that seems to describe most of our media class to a T.

I'm enjoying Neagley but in the second episode the villian is getting angry because hes trying to make a drug for mysterious purpose and instead makes an super-orgy drug and is all "dammit we can't use this for anything" and I feel his lack of commercial vision is a problem.

So i rather liked that. Its central metaphor is broadly enough i think it can be both specific to the filmmaker but also broad enough to resonate widely. Its also just a lot of fun at times.

What made me worry for DC (and Marvel) was that i was recently in our local comics/gaming shop and fully half the store was floor to ceiling Manga and the US comics were stuck in the back behind the board games, RPGs and Warhammer stuff.

Look, I think the Skydance merger is a disaster for the US film and TV industry but at the same time i can't help but roll my eyes at the number of takes that are "but what will happen to my precious franchises" They'll be fine, its originality and creative risk taking you need to worry about.

Apropos of the last comment, I would observe that making the Maul show "dark" (kinda) just meant they added characters with more than one dimension and killed some of them off, giving the show some actual fucking stakes to care about. (Then almost fucked it with a bunch of canon porn at the end)

I can't imagine the horror of that sort of attitude. I like cultural comfort food, I consume a fair bit of it. But I *need* new, I *need* stories i haven't heard before, perspectives I've never considered. I struggle to understand why people see this sort of intellectual and cultural death desirable
