Happy New Year from the Gardener's House team! On day 8 of our #12daysofchristmas, we revisit last May when we met Bridgitte. She played a crucial role as part of the Jewell Construction Ltd team on site. It was fascinating to hear about her experiences as a woman in a male-dominated field.

In April, we announced local artist Sue Lewington as our artist in residence to document the transformation of the derelict stables into the Gardeners’ House. Her artworks chronicling this fascinating journey will be compiled into a book forming part of our living archive . #12DaysofChristmas

We love these gorgeous tiles, created by the children at St Mary's School in Penzance, working with our artists, Jane Darke and Andrew Tebbs. The designs will inspire the installations we will have in the sensory garden - they're filled with colour, detail and a love of nature! #12daysofChristmas!

Wherever possible we ensured the plants found new homes in other parts of the gardens. While some plants have been moved, some of the larger, more established plants remain. They will be an integral part of a new sensory garden, thoughtfully designed for us by the Sensory Trust for all to enjoy.

So what's going to be happening when we're up and running? Lots! People will be using the archives for research or general interest, schools will be able to use our space for ecology studies, #SustainablePenzance will run workshops here - and much more.
The image shows typical examples of the activities which will take place at the Gardeners' House including a workshop led by Sustainable Penzance, a class from a local secondary school using the lab space for ecology studies and a group of home-educated children.

For many years Morrab's Head Gardeners lived in the gardens - accommodation for the gardener and their family was provided in the old stable block, next to Morrab Library. One of our supporters, Sue Griffin, recalls visiting her grandfather, William Watson, at his home in the gardens in 1948/9.

With access to all aspects of the garden, and filled with sensory highlights, even a small space can provide a wealth of engaging experiences. It can provide people who have limited mobility with opportunities to connect with nature for their mental and physical health and well-being.
This is a plan of the sensory garden that we will establish, with tactile surfaces and artwork to complement the sensory planting

We have asked the excellent Sensory Trust team to design and create a sensory garden space in the area between The Gardeners' House and the Pengarth Day Centre buildings. This picture of their show garden at the Hampton Court 2019 Garden Festival shows what a great sensory garden can look like.

With early support from @archhfund.org.uk Melissa brought together a team to draw up designs for renovation of the building and apply for further funding. Then in 2021 we received support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and were able to start work on a business plan and bid for funding.

We're new here! - so what better way to introduce ourselves than to look back at our journey . . . It starts with a derelict building next to the Morrab Library, in Morrab Gardens, Penzance. Built as stables for Morrab House, it became home to the Head Gardener but has since fallen into disuse.
A two-story granite building, clearly in a poor state of repair, which was once the stables for the adjacent Morrab House
