They’ve been going crazy for my asters as well! I’ve got a few bee balm blooms that are still holding on, and they love that too!

I used to see maybe 1-3 monarch butterflies during migration season in East Tennessee, but now I'm seeing 3-6 a day thanks to people planting small native flower patches!! Keep on planting native, y'all. It's working!!

Earlier this year I planted a few raspberry canes as part of my plan to have a food forest in my yard. I fully assumed I wouldn’t get any fruit this year, but I was wrong! I have a tiny crop!

Major US offshore wind farm installs its last turbine
Despite Trump’s attacks, Revolution Wind is nearing completion off the coast of Rhode Island. The 704-MW project is set to be fully operational this year.

GOOD NEWS: One of the offshore wind farms that the Trump administration tried to stop construction at has officially built all of its turbines, and it’s expected to generate power at full capacity by the end of the year which will help lower electric bills for residents in New England.

What better way to end #ClimateWeekNYC than getting to see progress on a project I’ve been following for years? Thanks for having me, Billion Oyster Project 🦪

This ad isn’t specifically about greenwashing, but it is about monopolies. Merging these two rail companies would be a horrible idea, and yet they’re trying to gain support for it.

Alaina Wood @thegarbagequeen.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Note how I said people and not corporations. The corporations are just here to greenwash and pat each other on the back for doing the bare minimum.

Do you know what hasn’t been said at any Climate Week NYC event I’ve attended? That it’s too late to take action. People here are fighting harder than ever before for a better future, so don’t give up because the climate experts certainly aren’t.

Up next is a fossil fuel major trying to greenwash crude oil as if the Strait of Hormuz or climate change isn’t a thing. I’ll keep adding to this thread when I see more!

I was inspired by @ketanjoshi.co to show off some of the greenwashed ads I’m seeing while attending Climate Week NYC. Up first, the AI industry trying to claim utility bills aren’t going up because of them by strategically choosing data that ignores when hyperscale data centers started operations.

✨no✨ I don’t have the same ethics around animals that vegans do because I grew up around farms, however, I still eat a plant forward diet because I understand the environmental and health impacts of our animal agriculture systems. I’m proof you don’t have to be perfect to make a difference.

Absolutely loving the conversations happening at the @selc.bsky.social #ClimateWeekNYC event about the intersection between race, class, and environmental injustices. It’s so refreshing to see Southern voices and organizing efforts get uplifted in spaces where we’re typically ignored.

Being at #ClimateWeekNYC is first time I’ve been somewhere I can loudly talk shit about Trump without fear of getting harassed / shot in two years, and I didn’t know how much I needed that until I arrived.

Y’all at #ClimateWeekNYC best beware. I brought my husband who works in construction, and he’s not going to hold back when it comes to affordability and accessibility around home electrification and green building practices.

Because I can’t afford *any* vehicle right now nor am I in the market for one. My gasoline sedan gets 40-60 mpg, is fully paid off, and only has 65,000 miles on it. I rarely use it too because I work from home and walk/e-bike whenever possible. When that car starts having trouble, I’ll replace it.

It’s too small for my husband’s work! It can barely haul lumber 😅 (I still can’t afford a $20,000 EV either)

When I make some progress, I'll definitely share! I'm trying to renovate a 100-year old home to be more sustainable and restore its original character. As soon as I'm back from Climate Week, I'll be planting the second phase of my backyard food forest too!

Alaina Wood @thegarbagequeen.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
I don't care if you bring up used EVs or charging with an extension cord. It's still a financial bad move for me because I'm in the middle of renovating my home by hand since I can't afford contractors. Once that's done and my current high MPG gasoline car starts having issues, then I'll buy an EV.

If I received $1,000 every single time someone tried to mansplain how to afford an electric vehicle to me, I might actually be able to afford one, but once again, I'm not in the market for one right now despite eventually wanting to go electric because it would be a poor financial decision.

Mitch McConnell, weirdly enough, looks like the male version of my Appalachian Nana. She is currently experiencing cognitive decline, and so I unfortunately recognize the look on Mitch's face all too well. It's the look of someone who isn't present, and what the Republicans are doing is elder abuse.
Photo of Senator Mitch McConnell looking frail and not all there mentally when he returned to the Senate earlier this week.

Y’all, I’ll go electric when I can afford it. The same goes for poor folks. Lecturing us about available options hasn’t magically fixed our financial situation. I’m not an op or sold out to big polluters either. I’m a sustainability scientist and climate activist. I’m on your side!

I literally saw someone who works for a prominent climate org say it on Threads over the weekend. I'm not naming names because they took down their posts after I reached out and explained that they were being classist without realizing it.

Alaina Wood @thegarbagequeen.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Because I'm seeing my colleagues yell at poor people for not being able to afford to electric. I wouldn't be exposing myself to this much hate if it wasn't an issue.

Maybe peek at someone's profile before commenting next time. I'm a sustainability scientist, climate activist, and award-winning science communicator. It's my job to monitor climate comms online. I'm seeing folks in the climate space yell at those not in the market for a vehicle.
020
Alaina Wood @thegarbagequeen.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Go look on Threads then. There's climate scientists and activists yelling "just buy electric" under pretty much every post where someone is complaining about high gas prices. They're yelling at folks who aren't even in the market for a vehicle right now and struggling to afford gas.

Alaina Wood @thegarbagequeen.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Y'all in the climate space need to go peek at the replies of the folks you follow because I'm noticing you're following quite a few of the accounts I'm having to block due to harassment.

Already have one and use it as much as possible! I haven't riden, though, since a local collegiate cycling team was killed and injured after a driver plowed through them and then a week later a cop hit a cyclist in the middle of crossing for a trail I frequently use. I wish it was safer to cycle!

Right?! I'm doing all my home renovations myself because I can't afford otherwise. I have no idea how people are affording all this stuff without going into horrific debt. I won't be buying an EV or solar until I can outright pay for it or have a small monthly payment. I don't need more debt!

Alaina Wood @thegarbagequeen.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Don't get me wrong. There were a lot of great options brought up in the replies, but they won't work for folks struggling to make ends meet. I'll personally go electric as soon as I'm done fixing my house and can save up for a down payment + charger installation. That'll take years though!

Alaina Wood @thegarbagequeen.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Lesson learned. Do not bring up class on Bluesky. Y'all have zero empathy for those outside of your class and think lecturing them about available options will somehow magically fix their financial situation.

Alaina Wood @thegarbagequeen.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
My husband and I are doing all the work ourselves because that's all we can afford. We even get free or discounted materials from construction waste when available. When I can afford an EV, I'll buy one. Nothing you say will change that. My finances just aren't there yet!

I block hundreds of accounts a week, and it's starting to dig into time meant for actual work to block those accounts. I wish there was an easier way!

Alaina Wood @thegarbagequeen.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
You want to pay for my all my home's repairs? Because that's what's holding me back from being able to afford going electric (and solar). I also own an e-bike and use it whenever possible, so I'm not really worried about the little bit I drive my gasoline car. I'll go electric when I can afford it.
