Did mammals evolve live birth more than once?! New fossils discoveries from South Africa and Argentina reveal some cute Triassic mammal babies, one *in ovo* and one captured in histology. So where DID mammal babies come from? 👶🥚🦡 1/2

Calling Fossil Fans - can you think of memorable occasions when palaeontology was reported in the news - when it went well, and perhaps more pertinently, when it didn't go well?

3. Acinonyx kurteni was described as one of the earlier fossil Cheetahs, but after publication it was revealed that its skull and been 'enhanced' with plaster and plastic. It's zygomatic arch was a rib. And it wasn't Pliocene, but Miocene.

When Timothy Rowe and colleagues CT scanned it, the fossil was found to be a composite. The rear part ended up being far more interesting than the fake: it was the legs of quadro-winged lunatic Microraptor!

2. Archaeoraptor created quite the stir when it was first described in 1999 in National Geographic as an important 'feathered dinosaur', but some were suspicious almost immediately

After applying lots of high powered analytical techniques, it appears the soft tissues weren't so lovely after all but potentially had been painted on at some point, probably in the 1930s. OOPS.

1. Tridentinosaurus is a beautiful looking reptile from the Permian of Italy described in the 1950s. It was potentially one of the earliest reptiles, and yielded lovely soft tissues, so @she-paleo.bsky.social and colleagues decided to take a closer look

When I first heard about this, my brain looked at the numbers, 476 over millions of years, and concluded this was actually "That Spot Where All The Other Wales Told Them Not To Go, But They Went Anyway And Were Never Seen Again." I realise it's not as catchy as WHALE NECROPOLIS, obviously.
