Poor Dakota Johnson, catchin' strays. She tries and I thought she tried fairly hard in this season's episode. I feel like Dakota Johnson is a taste thing and some of the writing done for her suggests ideas based on her strengths and her persona. Unlike Gillis.

It's my guess that Tina Fey feels enough loyalty to Lorne that she would never take the gig under any circumstance that felt in any way forced. Ditto with Seth Myers. Either one would require an endorsed and orderly coronation. Again, just my guess.

It's fairly obvious that Shane Gillis sees no professional advantage to doing "SNL." And the sad thing is that he's probably correct. He's big enough that "SNL" doesn't benefit him one iota. He clearly does it out of sheer resentment, because he thinks it vindicates him for having been fired.

Ultimately, the fact that Lorne Michaels doesn't care about EITHER take 1 or 2 is a pretty solid reflection of Lorne Michaels' sensibility at this point. Every time he does something like this, "Platformed bigots and autocrats in the name of ratings" moves up higher on his obituary. 3/2

2. Gillis a BAD "SNL" host and has been THRICE. He puts in no evident effort and gets no evident pleasure out of doing something that is supposed to be fun. There's no evidence the cast likes working with him or the writers like writing for him and he should never host "SNL" again. 2/2

I have two complementary takes on Shane Gillis and his latest "SNL" stuff. 1. Gillis has a history of being racist, xenophobic and misogynistic and his monologue was very misogynistic. He never should have hosted "SNL" in the first place or second place and he should never host "SNL" again. 1/2

On the TV side, he's been tempting fate for years, raising the ante on smugness almost project-by-project. On the film side, he's just a VERY bad director who has decided he wants to direct all of his own material. None of these are a reason for hatred, necessarily. But they contribute.

CBS' new vampire sitcom "Eternally Yours" is apparently so freaking complicated a production that critics were only sent the pilot. And the pilot is pretty weak. So *sure* it has potential to get better, but I can't review "potential" nor should anybody else be.
