this is a sophomoric argument & trump's own words prove why. (among many other things). we have to stop listening to anyone who thinks like this. it's actually embarrassing.

in a way, actors who advance fictive narratives through mythologizing or world-building participate in a digital form of "sleight of hand". they draw upon real histories and injustices to rebuild a truth that squarely places trust into the powerful.

perhaps the campaign is so masterful that it made zohran's clear embrace of all the stuff we're told to keep quiet about - ethnicity, religion, immigration, gender, poverty - seem inevitable or invisible. either way, his team is incredible. they've already built a new website, soliciting resumes!

notice what's a shift online of late? a huge uptick in creativity about the election! new social media memes and trends about mamdani and his wife, Rama! much of it rooted in an embrace of the social politics that are being disintegrated federally: equality! multiculturalism!

and my last point and the real reason i created this thread: we're in a cultural recession. authoritarianism and represssion suppresses humanity through fear, anxiety, and terror. humor, light-heartedness and creativity are often stifled amidst authoritarianism and economic decline.

an excellent NYT article analyzes how the mamdani volunteer arm created community through various meet ups, events, and activities - getting people off their phones and into the real world! connecting with other human beings over shared interest. a huge deal in the age of disconnection.

the most popular campaign videos on his youtube include: -convo with bernie sanders -meeting with taxi cab drivers, all immigrants, who were drowning in debt before a hunger strike. -a ramadan video with Egyptian comedian kareem, famous for "subway takes" -a get out the vote promo in Urdu

he eschewed the unspoken rule of colorblindness touted by the left ("people don't care about identity when they can't afford the rent" is the very false mentality) and leaned into it! take his "until it's done" short form series, for example, highlighting historic new yorkers - almost all POC.

thee sociologist @theesociologist.bsky.social · 08/11/2025
rather than fearing "identity politics", zohran wholeheartedly embraced his multiple identities as a third culture kid with roots in uganda, south africa, india and new york. his short form videos posted across platforms featured working class immigrants, almost all POC, some muslim.

Zohran's campaign ads buck the traditional, predictable (inherently coded white-straight-male) aesthetics. the team opted for colorful, artistic, and yes, wedded to his cultural heritage. The designer says Zohran was inspired by Bollywood. www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/politic...

can't underscore enough how deeply important cultural artifacts are, particularly around food, music, film, and so forth. this isn't unique to POC, but it is uniquely amplified by POC, esp. the black community in the U.S. from whence the mainstream taps the most popular memes, jokes.

obviously, i must mention: -zohran was an aspiring soundcloud rapper who uses social media with ease. he promoted cool music videos on his various platforms. -he's the son of an iconic female director, mira nair. a rich tapestry of color, sound, sights wasn't taken for granted

lefties generally discount the importance of tapping into the zeitgest to garner support from young(ish) voters, the social media generations (millenials and down). zohran mamdani and his campaign, fortunately, did not. they leaned into it, heavily.

nyc mayoral election perfectly exemplifies this: neither adams nor cuomo could gain a foothold into youth demos that admire, excuse, or embrace them. & young people embrace a lot of, let's say, morally questionable people! it was an utter failture on their part.

if there's one area for improvement among political analysis, it's just how profoundly impactful *culture* is to campaigns, win or lose.

I've said it many times before and Andrew Cuomo is making me say it again: we don't have a cancellation problem. We have never had a cancellation problem. To the contrary, we have a problem that "disgrace" is a very temporary embarrassment— an brief entr'acte more than an intermission.

this "free speech" EO is another "perverse reverse" measure - it permits trump to target and punish any org or platform for removing hate speech, misinformation and disinformation. it opens the floodgates for a digital reality imbued with hate and bigotry - without guardrails.

i really appreciate @nkalamb.bsky.social 's theory of "structural coercion". it's an incisive framework for a theory i formulated 8 years ago about the reality TV contestant to influencer pipeline. who cares if you want to find love? what you really need is economic mobiliy.

7 years ago, black scholars and advocates urged the threat of trump ending birthright citizenship and dismantling the 14th amendment. this amendment gave black americans legal rights as citizens. it created protections that birthed broader movements. the U.S. continues to fail us.

That's problematic because part of reading is comprehension and *thinking*. Writing with incorrect spelling and grammar isn't about elite snobbery, it's clarity. Lack of clear thinking leads to lack of clear ideas. Transmitted confidently to MILLIONS of followers!

I don't bring this up to mock illiteracy - quite the reverse. I am incredulous that there's not a single person managing this account to edit or verify basic sentence structure. My research on such sites have led me to believe that this is a feature, not a bug!

This is the kind of "hip hop" site that posts celebrity gossip and "news". On November 22, they posted this image on Twitter. Notive anything about the headline? "Woman is Going Viral For saying thi about her date paying for her nails the moment she brung it up." No, seriously.

case study #1 - Illiteracy in gossip blogs/"media" sites, example 1: This is Raphouse TV, a blog "for the culture". they post content on Twitter (148K), IG (499K), TikTok (185K), Facebook (163K), Youtube (490K) and a website. Across social media alone that's 1.5 million followers.

for good reason, many Black Americans don't trust biomedical/scientific communities. the notion that the vaccine is a chip wasn't a far cry from other conspiracy theories about HIV transmission. there was a successful cultural shift from 2020-2022: all bets are off. everything is a conspiracy.

COVID-19 was a turning point in the U.S. it marked a time of fear, shock, and upheaval. conspiracy theories, fake scientific articles/reports about vaccines flourished. black americans were specifically targeted & it worked. because of culturally-specific beliefs.

i believe literacy is DECLINING because social media sites stopped using spell and grammar correction/checking. the rudimentary writing level is shocking. but it's everywhere, not just the "news" blogs. if you struggle to write a cogent sentence, you are VULNERABLE to content farms & disinfo.

the most frustrating aspect of viewing these so-called "journalism" or "news" pages is the complete LACK of journalistic integrity. almost zero spell checking, let alone grammar. entire headlines misspelled. names, dates, locations inaccurate or decontextualized. poor literacy was a trademark.
