A dog stealing a baby's drink doesn't make you want a root beer? 😂

The objective of education is to make desirable changes in the way of living; the Quaker objective is a new way of life arrived at through spiritual experiences. The child’s creative urge is the precious stuff to release and to rely on: The best schoolmasters seem to be saying, as clearly as Quakers when they invoke the inner light, ‘The kingdom of God is within you.’

It changed hands several times over the years, and at the time it was discontinued in 2024, it was America’s oldest continuously-operating soft drink brand. Not bad for a Quaker pharmacist with some roots, a recipe, and a mind for marketing!

The “healthy” drink got its distinctive flavor from sassafras oil, which the FDA banned in 1960 after it was found to cause liver damage and cancer in laboratory animals. Root beer manufacturers quickly reformulated their recipes. Hires Root Beer stayed in the family until 1960.

Thee Quaker @theequaker.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Hires eventually had an independent laboratory test the drink. The results came back that a bottle contained roughly as much alcohol as half a loaf of bread. Hires advertised the results and sales soared past their pre-boycott level. Then came another ironic and unfortunate twist.
110
Thee Quaker @theequaker.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Despite Hires' Quaker commitment to temperance, the name of his product got him into an ironic fight. The Women’s Christian Temperance Union launched a nationwide campaign against Hires Root Beer, believing it contained alcohol. The boycott lasted three years, devastating sales.

Hires handed out free glasses of his frothy drink and sold packets of concentrate for home brewing. And the marketing stunt paid off: Hires Root Beer went on to become America’s first popular commercial soft drink, practically as prevalent as Coca-Cola is today.

His big break came at Philadelphia’s 1876 Centennial Exposition, celebrating America’s 100th birthday and attracting 10 million visitors over six months. It was a showcase of new products, including Remington’s typewriter, Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone, and H.J. Heinz’s ketchup.

Hires was interested in presenting his drink as a wholesome alternative to beer. He originally planned to call his creation “root tea,” but a friend convinced him that “root beer” would sell better, especially to Pennsylvania’s beer-loving coal miners.

Back home, Hires set out to recreate it without that particular side effect. Many Quakers at the time, Hires among them, abstained from alcohol, seeing it as one of the causes of domestic violence and other societal problems.

Did you know a Quaker teetotaler helped turn root beer into an American icon? 🥤 Philadelphia pharmacist Charles Hires (1851–1937) first tasted a root-based drink on his honeymoon in 1875. He loved the flavor, but the original concoction was also a powerful laxative.

To educate children religiously requires a quietude of mind and sympathy in their guardians, with the state of the good seed in them, which will lead rightly to discriminate between good and evil; to discover the corrupt source of many seeming good actions; and to perceive that a real innocency is the root of others….

Here we see the necessity of true wisdom being renewed, and the insufficiency of that which is carnal, and boasts its own experience and strength. It is the humbled mind to which is unfolded such mysteries of true godliness.

Quakers gather in silent worship year round. On Peace Day, that silence can connect us with millions of people around the world seeking the same thing.

One way to participate in today's International Day of Peace is to join in a minute of silence at noon. Seeing this post too late? Take a minute of silence at the start of any hour, and your prayers or thoughts for those affected by war and violence will join those of others in another time zone.

🕊🕊🕊 For Quakers, commitment to peace is one of the Testimonies of our faith. Quaker pacifism is active, not passive, resisting war, oppression, and injustice through peaceful means.

Friends’ peace testimony challenges us all to be peace educators. We may not all be teachers, but we are all communicators, and we all need to be learners. Peace education should be seen as an integral part of our peace testimony. But it is essentially something one does, and not something one talks about…. Learning, to be educated, means changing one’s behavior, and peace education therefore aims at changing our own individual behavior. We communicate our values by the manner of our lives….

I can truly ascribe all my knowledge in divine things to the inward manifestation of grace and truth, the teaching of the Holy Spirit. It was Christ, the Light of the world, the Life of men, who opened to me the Scriptures, and gave me a discerning of their meaning; and, as I was faithful and obedient to the pointings of Truth, I was favored with further and clearer discoveries thereof.

Nothing, I believe, can really teach us the nature and meaning of inspiration but personal experience of it. That we may all have such experience if we will but attend to the divine influences in our own hearts, is the cardinal doctrine of Quakerism.

Today, there are Quaker organizations working nationally and internationally to support fair labor standards. Many Quakers consider it important to be informed consumers, learning about the working conditions of the people who produce goods before making a purchase.

Quaker employers responded by exploring industrial democracy: committees with elected representatives and equal representation for employers and employees. They supported cooperation and negotiation rather than simply expecting workers to accept the decisions of a “benevolent” employer.

Quakers in the 17th century had the idea to create local labor offices to help unemployed people find work, and imagined self-sufficient communities that would provide employment, education, health care, and a reasonable standard of living, which earned praise from Karl Marx centuries later.

The Lord God of heaven and earth is come to teach his people himself by his light, Spirit, grace, and truth, and to bring them off all the world’s teachers. God hath raised up Christ Jesus, his Prophet, whom people should hear; and saith, ‘This is my beloved Son, hear ye Him,’ and Christ saith, ‘Learn of me, I am the way, the truth, and the life; and no man comes to the Father, but by me.’

Today, there are many humanitarian and peacebuilding organizations that are founded jointly on Quaker and Gandhian principles.

The influence flowed both ways. Quaker author Richard Gregg helped introduce Gandhi's ideas to the West, in turn inspiring Civil Rights organizer Bayard Rustin, a key advisor to Martin Luther King Jr.

The experience inspired Gandhi to incorporate silent meditation into the prayers at his ashram, and Alexander remained a trusted friend throughout India's journey to independence.

That connection deepened through Gandhi's decades-long friendship with British Quaker Horace Alexander. Gandhi stayed with Alexander at Woodbrooke Quaker study center in Birmingham during his negotiations with England in 1931, where he attended meeting for worship.

Though he rejected Christianity, the Quakers encouraged Gandhi’s study of comparative religion. Learning about Quaker pacifism also reinforced Gandhi’s emerging belief that justice cannot be achieved through violence.

Gandhi’s interest in religion, which began in his childhood with his devoutly Hindu mother, deepened quickly when he moved to South Africa as a young lawyer in 1893. As part of his religious exploration, Gandhi became friends with a small group of Quakers in Pretoria.

If we want to champion truth, the first step on the road is knowing why we want to do it. We need to commit to it as a way of life. It may start with a particular issue, an injustice, or a cause, or it might be a desire to be closer to God by living in and with the truth and its challenges.

There will be times when it involves holding out against the tide, standing up for what is right regardless of the cost. That’s why it’s important the search for truth includes a quest for clarity about what we believe—what it is we stand for. That’s a process, an evolving spiritual experience, but it’s one we need to be honest and clear about if we’re going to pursue truth in the world.
