I suspect The Testament of Ann Lee is going to vanish pretty quickly if, as predicted, it strikes out completely with Oscar noms, but it's better than most of the movies still in the race, as well as a better Fastvold/Corbet joint than The Brutalist. (Soundtrack's all bangers, too.)

F1 is the Gen X version of a Kevin Costner movie. Smug condescension over young people and insistence that we did things better "back then." Eddington is going to be discussed for decades. F1 will be forgotten in two months.

Semi-related: Dick Goddard came to my high school's opening night of Singin' in the Rain to do a little cross-promo. I was playing Cosmo and had some pre-show jitters. This dude would not stop talking about the origin of the term "raining cats and dogs." Like 15 minutes. Really calmed me down.

I feel like this town was once known for its unpretentious criticisms that would cut through (and cut down) the hype machine, but the internet has really flattened out culture. Big institutions are more interested in reporting box office numbers than film quality. I mean, this was Gene Siskel's job!

Think the NBA needs to research the root cause of all these torn Achilles tendons: the shoes. Give everyone a pair of early ‘00s Nike Shox for a season and see how things shake out. Probably won’t be better, but at least we’ll get a year where Shox are cool again.
