His ability at that side of things, and ultimately seeing politics as transactional, was incredible. I'm sure you know way more than me! Her stories always struck me because she was/is VERY left (these conversations were +/- 2008 and she was a passionate Nader voter) but she'd defend him fiercely

An old friend used to defend him greatly. Her grandparents lived next to him and she has great memories of how kind he was while she was growing up. He was a dependable source of popsicles on hot summer days. When arguing about him, I was always like "that's how they work!"

*He only qualifies on a technicality. Martin served a second term as speaker from '53-'55. He did not hold an elected position after that term ended.

No Republican that's held the House Speaker position since Joseph W. Martin Jr. from 1947-49* has gone on to hold an elected office of any kind after their speakership ended.

#Funfact: Jim Traficant was no longer allowed to caucus with the Democrats because he voted for Hastert for Speaker in 2000. (His 30 pieces of silver was a $26 million federal grant used to build the Covelli Centre, an entertainment venue in downtown Youngstown.)

feels like there is a group of smart and well-intentioned people who long ago made up their minds that AI Is Human, swore off any other relationships, and now get all their love from ai. not saying they're wrong that ai is lovely! but i think they're gradually losing touch with other humans
