I once got to play a piece that was entirely hand written and I think it was like 30 (or more) minutes long. I remember complaining that the composer didn't put the clef and key at the beginning of the lines. Girl, I stopped doing that in the first 2 minutes! Nobody got time for that!😭

I went back over my handwritten notes. I tried to be neat... I'm grateful that digital notation is a thing. Measures all uneven, stems lookin crazy I forgot how cool it is to handwrite music. Bonus that it's also much faster for me. Music writers, give it a go. Reconnect with the music.

Oh, sorry. I mean like a mistake that's not obvious. If someone were to play a wrong note and it's wrong, I'd correct that (with a note). But sometimes people may mess up their entrances (but recover really well) for example, and that's what I was specifically talking about.

Another thing that's come up today is very interesting: corrections. Do you keep the mistakes in with the transcription or do you correct them? There's an argument to be made for both, but I personally go with what will be easier/"more natural" to perform. I'll make a note if I change anything.

I think mostly #1 is perfectly fine, especially if the musician already knows the style. #2 Is more general purpose and makes the musician sound more stylistically correct, but is a bit harder to read. #3 tbh, I wouldn't want to read this, but it's correct. Performing this may come out stiff imo.

So, this is kind of getting into some of what I was talking about yesterday. These are all the same measure transcribed in different ways (ignore 8vb). #1 for me reads more like an outline #2 for me is like a sketch #3 is like the drawing itself You can add and fluidly interpret with less detail.

3 versions of the same measure. (Ignore 8vb). They all can be interpreted in different ways, but the lower down you go, the less wiggle room there is.

I was looking at transcriptions of really old songs from enslaved Africans and Native Americans, and they are very legible and clean. But then you look at the performance notes and they left out stuff to keep the notation simple. Accessibility vs accuracy has been on my mind all day today.

So, yeah, I'm kind of compromising by "guiding" the musicians rather than setting hard boundaries for them to follow, and they can infuse the pieces with their own individual soul. I think it's good, but if someone yells at me, I'll have to redo it...😫

Idk, if I'm explaining this properly, but think of your favorite Gospel or R&B singer doing a run. I could write out the run. But then the next person to sing it using my transcription will be trying to squeeze into a dress too small for them. Black music (like black history) is about freedom.

Okay, so... The primary goal of music preservation is accurately keeping the music for the future. But black music is a little different. One of the dilemmas I'm facing is to keep the accuracy of the notes vs the accuracy of the "feeling." The soul of the pieces.

If it passes, the courts can say HOW it's implemented, but it must be implemented and to the satisfaction of the people (who are the ones who can judge it).

The courts can't overrule what the people directly vote for in a referendom. A question is placed before the people in plain language and the people vote (including the judges). It would be super rigged if a handfull of the people who vote on it can just make whatever option they want the law.

I wonder if since the bar is now super high to prove racism in gerrymandering, can't we just redraw the districts in favor of Black, Latino, and Indigenous people instead? It's always against, so now it can be for and with a random reason. Population shift or one of the usual excuses.

It's not like anyone expects you to have the answer, but as a follower of Christ, you have a duty to respond with compassion and empathy if you choose to respond. Anything else, and you risk turning people away from Him, which is an explicit sin. Even I, a non-religious person, know that.

Media malpractice needs to be a thing because once all reasonable signs pointed to this outcome (literal playbook called Project 2025) there needed to be a big shift in coverage. The "what he meant was" and sanewashing was infuriating. But they're on his team, so that was never going to happen.

You can treat people how you want to. They are free to respond (or not in your case) in kind. I just think it's weird that you expect the worker to keep up the veneer even when the customer has clearly dropped it. Because a good manager would kick a bad customer out as soon as fire a bad employee.

...it sounds like they are going to try to let the guessing machines be judges. So what I think that means is all of the bias and disparity rampant in the justice system is going to go up by 10x. AND they're going to harvest more very sensitive data. That sounds very bad and I hate it.
