These brands are huge but so much work happens in silos. That’s why I feel like someone at Target understood their processes, wanted to try some shit for their own entertainment and it actually slid. Same type of people that would say crazy shit about their teacher in white font and turn it in.

On the other end, a lot of white people don’t think enough about whiteness. One of my colleagues literally stopped a giant snack brand from running ads with a huge K K K design baked into it from simple text alignment. She was probably the 8th person to see that work by that point.

Casually mentioned my favorite Jay-Z albums to my dad yesterday and this man who has never had any strong affinities for music beyond Prince suddenly went to bat for The Blueprint. In 33 years of life, I’ve never heard him go to bat for an album. It being a rap album is an even bigger shock 😭

I have similar feelings about Obama. You don’t have to attempt to rationalize with me about something “bad” you did. You’re Barack Obama. You can’t please all of “us” and still become or be Barack Obama. He wouldn’t ever respond in the same way to criticism but I like when Jay stands in “I’m Jay Z.”

I’ve seen Jay through a lens of admiration for 20+ years now. As I’ve matured as a Black man, I’ve developed my own stances and feelings that sometimes clash with his. He’s still my American dream, but to be Jay Z, you can’t concurrently serve as a moral blueprint or compass for a larger community.
