There's this weird divide between designers making games that push the form & designers trying to make the perfect combat system. So none of the combat systems are really pushing the form, and none of the form-pushing games have great combat.

THAT'S ME!! If you want solo RPGs with real mechanical challenges, this is for you. I play it when I take breaks from designing my other games. Addiction is real, people.

It's interesting how a lot of writers fetishize the "what is a ttrpg?" section - you would assume this means the game is written for a first time player. And yet many of these games are fundamentally nonfunctional unless you have prior knowledge to fill in their gaps.

Does anyone have examples of solo ttrpg combat systems that use theater of the mind but also provide some kind of tactical decision making? I'm aware of Ironsworn's "push-your-luck" type system.

Weird resolution system concept: Ice Cubes. How would you design a game that uses real life ice to resolve outcomes?

I just released my first RPG! thecornelia.itch.io/adrift It is a social deduction one-shot that uses a deck of cards, all about four sailors starving to death in a rowboat. Most of my followers are bots and spam accounts, so please repost if you think its neat!

Any good TTRPGs about riding dragons (How to train your dragon style)? NOT interested in being dragons or killing dragons. Interested in playing a dragon AND rider as player characters.

☝️Last Train to Bremen hack but its about a ship crew smuggling refuges out of a fascist state... and a betrayal.
A TTRPG page spread. Text:
The ship is gone. You watched her hull split open, the sea pour in, and the storm consume everything. You remember the cargo you carried: the people below decks, the ones you swore to bring to safe water. Maybe some of them made it to the lifeboats. You hope so.
Now there are four of you on a rowboat too small for four, and a sky that will not stop stirring overhead. No engine. No land in any direction. Only the stars, the thinning storm, and the knowledge that one of you betrayed the cause you spent your lives working for.
Here there is a small group of fish drawn in the shapes of card suits.
Text resumes:
What is this?
Adrift in a Constellation Storm is a storytelling game for four players (no more & no fewer). It takes about an hour once you know the rules. You play the surviving crew of a smuggling boat that ran refugees out of a fascist state, until a member of the crew radioed your position to the regime, and the storm and the cannons did the rest.
One of you is that someone. The rest of you are trying to live long enough to find out who.
Underneath the fiction is a bluffing game. You will bid over a shared field of hidden cards that represent the stars in the sky. You’ll call each other liars, and lose, and starve, and in the starving, recall your past.
You will need: one standard deck of 52 cards (no jokers), a table you can sit around in a circle (or a rowboat, for immersion), and the stomach for a story that does not end well for most of you.
