@aduralde.bsky.social @christylemire.bsky.social Really enjoyed your non spoiler review of Digger guys, I wanted more anger and fury in the film instead of comedy and satire

20th Century Fox often took swings, hell Star Wars was one of them as Universal and United Artists said no and only Alan Ladd Jr the then head of Fox believed in it, And then it became the highest grossing film of its day and Fox later made Alien/Predator/Die Hard/Home Alone among many others

Say what you will about Zaslav (and a lot of the kicks he got were self inflicted) but at the very least he found good people and let them run things, if it works great if it doesn't then that's on you as well, Now with Ellison in charge I sadly feel that his WarnerSkyMount Empire will get worse

As Digger digs through my head the main thing I keep coming back to is "Where is this Generation's Oliver Stone?" If you look at JFK/Platoon/Wall Street and Talk Radio you can see a clear through line in terms of putting a microscope through how a great country loses its way and gets seduced

The streaming boom is starting to go bust and the damage that was left (loss of Fox/Para/WB, billions of debt) is going to have bad after effects on the industry which they brought on themselves by getting greedy and selling convenience

The Paramount Decrees need to be updated when this era is over because studios having their own streaming services has helped to create this mess we’re in right now

That Skydance Video opening on a clip of Titanic last night was definitely a choice, Titanic is a movie about how the greed and hubris of man ultimately leads to a devastating tragedy that costs thousands of lives and permanently affects those who survived

More than once this year I’ve been in a cinema all on my own watching a film, Now I don’t mind that but cinema going cannot keep depending on a small group of films to keep the lights on, they need consistent foot traffic, Aus cinemas at least have School Holidays to help but other areas don’t

Simon Waite @thecinemascene.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

Another thing I keep coming back to regarding the new Skydance Empire is; Will we see a repeat of what happened with Scream 7? Now I know that all happened before Skydance came in but given the politics behind it and some of the rumors out there could that happen more and more

Part of me keeps wondering about Warner Brothers and Paramounts home video releases now their under the Skydance Empire, Do they just get cancelled or pulled to try and pay down the huge debt or do those divisions get axed with the huge job losses that are going to follow

000

Simon Waite @thecinemascene.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

Being a film fan is a little sadder today given the Skydance announcement, Part of me hopes the whole thing drowns in debt because that debt bomb is a huge one, Tick tick tick…

This year movie wise has been rough, Don’t get me wrong we’ve had some great stuff but the main feeling I’ve been having is “why isn’t this better”, A number of these films have talented and capable people at the helm and yet they were not good to sit through and the better movie is waiting inside

010

Simon Waite @thecinemascene.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

Street Fighter looks pretty cheesy and not in the best way either

000

Simon Waite @thecinemascene.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

The kind of filmmaker I wish we had today making movies about this time period is someone like young Oliver Stone, When you look at Platoon/Wall Street/Talk Radio/JFK those films speak to a genuine anger about how greed and hubris can devastate so many lives and I wish we had that now

Simon Waite @thecinemascene.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

Before my movie watching I posted this earlier this morning

000

Simon Waite @thecinemascene.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

VERITY looks okay (I know it’s out already but I haven’t seen it yet) but it also made me wish we still had thriller directors like Paul Verhoeven and Richard Marquand, Those 2 knew how to make that kind of thriller work and could also get good performances out of their actors

000

Simon Waite @thecinemascene.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

If this year in movies has shown me anything it is this: 1: I love going on my own 2: Strong creative voices are more important than ever 3: Those creatives need as many places to go to as ever and not fewer

So it looks like WarnerSkyMount is a go, Thanks I fucking hate it; - I hate how we got here, a spoilt brat throwing a tantrum over the studio they already own and doing it loud enough and long enough that they get their way - I hate the loss of a studio that had started to find its way again

David Shoebridge will be a more effective Greens leader than Waters was, Waters wasn’t bad in the role and got stuff done but she struggled to find cut through, Shoebridge will have better cut through but he could also be another Adam Bandt, a hardliner who digs in his heels on every issue
