Casey Lab @thecaseylab.bsky.social · 06/10/2023You're right that parrotfishes produce sand when they consume algae and cyanobacteria growing on reef limestone! Interestingly, parrotfishes typically consume the feces of species higher in the food chain and not parrotfish poop! Here's a great article about that! www.int-res.com/articles/mep... 110
Casey Lab @thecaseylab.bsky.social · 05/10/2023A study led by hannah-rempel.bsky.social found that Caribbean parrotfishes + surgeonfishes regularly eat fish poop, especially that of planktivores! Casey Lab @thecaseylab.bsky.social · 05/10/2023A 2023 study led by Jacey Van Wert shows that while fish poop nutritional quality varies across species, it is often packed with macro- and micronutrients (Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Zn, Mn) that are a rich source for hungry fishes and reef productivity! 🪸 esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... 140
