We’re in the back third of 2026, which means it’s time to talk about our 9th character creation challenge and some of the characters I came up with out of it! For September, I decided to focus exclusively on Wizards of the Coast-created subclasses. We had a mix of choices that were either brand new or upgraded for 5.5 as well as some older options I hadn’t quite settled on a character idea for, so let’s take a quick sample of the month’s work…

Conntinuing on from Part 1, let's finish this series of revisions! Paladin There have been a number of truly excellent Paladins released since this list came out, but I think there are two that stand out for me enough to crack the top 5, and they touch on two of my favorite themes, so it's not really all that surprising.

With the new book Arcane Unleashed out, the magic subclasses we talked about last year (first time, second time) are now fully out in the wild, so as we did with the Artificer and the Horror items that ended up in the Ravenloft book, lets talk about the final versions Arcana Domain Cleric Most the features are the same as the first playtest, which considering they didn't feel the need to publish an updated version in the second playtest would make a lot of sense.

Starting in May of last year, I did a series where I ranked my top 5 favorite homebrew subclasses for each class. We're going to take another look at those lists and see if anything's changed. We might see new entrants, we might have a change in opinion on where things rank, or nothing might have changed at all!

For the month of August, I wanted to focus on one of my favorite D&D Species - Dragonborn. Earlier in the year I made a chart of every Dragonborn character I had, separated out by scale color, while also counting how many times I had used each class with one. I also jotted down some ideas for the Gem Dragonborn introduced in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons based on the common personality traits of their associated Gem Dragons.

I wasn't going to do another character build post so soon, but then the new Partnered Content release schedule for D&D Beyond was posted, and look who's on it for a December release? That's right, KibblesTasty's Warlord class is coming to D&D Beyond. To celebrate, we're going to do a Warlord build post. However, the Warlord doesn't really have any decision points in its leveling structure outside of the same points all characters have, like choosing feats.

Tempest (first mentioned here) was not the first character I created out of KibblesTasty’s Warden class, but he does remain my favorite on the strength of his subclass and his backstory, elements of which draw on themes from my own campaign setting. He uses the Dreadwing subclass, and gained his power when he helped slay a blue dragon that been ravaging their home, trying to drive them out.

For July's challenge, I decided to mirror what we did in March, but for subclasses to be published in Machines of Bone and Blood. Let's get into a small sampling of the many new characters created. If you've been keeping up with Plus 5 to Hit's newest campaign, you'd know that characters from previous campaigns are making appearances. My boy Seth has been mentioned, Ben's monk made an appearance in the prologue, and in the most recent episode, Shield has been reawakened. Sort of. Rho has made it clear on more than one occasion that he does not view these characters as being the same ones that we previously played, but it has had me envisioning the possibility down the line of doing an interlude where we play our old characters, or at least versions of them, once again.

Since the Kickstarter ends in 4 days, I thought it might be a fun discussion to talk about what we think from somanyrobots’ existing work is going into Machines of Bone and Blood. Here’s what we KNOW is going to be there, either because it’s mentioned in the Kickstarter (either the page itself or in the sample materials) or because the subclass doc specifically mentions the setting.

Xardorim was first conceived as a Baldur's Gate 3 character, a Blue Dragonborn Wizard specializing in the School of Necromancy so I could enjoy running round with a big batch of undead minions. However, while the Necromancy Wizard might be fun in a game like BG3, at the table it's an absolute mess that can add entirely too many minions to a combat, bogging down combat with a single player's turn dominating the time spent and trivializing encounters.

I've had a few items from creators like Mage Hand Press and Loot Tavern, as well as third party books like the Blazing Dawn Player's Companion, on my list to use for quite a while, but in preparation for this month, I started looking at some of the creations from folks I've met through Kibs and robots' communities.
