And the characters are very well thought out and rounded and pulling at the mystery is great fun as you follow along with the protagonist. IF scifi is more your vibe then the Expanse is excellent, a series of books that remain gripping and grounded from start to finish and has v good commentary

Well, the entire discworld series is fantastic (the witches and the guard ones in particular). If you want something more sherlock holmes-y I can thoroughly recommend the shadow of the leviathan series by Robert Jackson Bennett. REally fucking cool setting, very different from traditional fantasy
