I wrote a poem about the humiliation of selling your labour. I'm feeling many complicated feelings about my place in the arts world after I got fired last week. Enjoy my angst.

Labour Day

Hercules hangs his hard hat
on the hind antler hook.
He would rather have
to hunt Hydra
than haul his ass
back to Home Depot.
Where horned up
househusbands
ask him
“where’s the hard
wood at?”

Hermes spends his
half-hour break
hunched over the console
of his hatchback,
aiming his stream.
Straight as an arrow
into the hydro-flask.
His Amazon hoodie
obscuring his humanity.

Hephaestus forged the perfect ergonomic chair
He leans his lumbar
into the mesh, his hamstring
rests irritated, while the Zoom call
ring bells. He’s hammering his pencil
against the arm rest. He doesn’t know why.
He feels like maybe he should have
worked from home today.
There isn’t even any coffee on.

Hecate hits record
and speaks her rehearsed words
into the webcam. She draws cards,
gives knowing looks to the camera,
and when her cat claws her computer desk,
she sighs and does a retake.
She sells pithy fortunes for a pittance.
And when the sun hangs low,
she turns on the ring light
and holds her hands
in an ancient gesture.
