Rebel Fire by Ann Sei Lin. As ever my thoughts are in the ALT. #bookreview #booksky
Cover for Ann Sei Lin's Rebel Fire. at the top it says "one flame can burn an empire". "Rebel Fire" is in large white letters that are breaking down into paper pieces. in the background is a lake in a crater. In the mid ground is the Shikigami Phoenix Suzaku. In the foreground, the protagonist, Kurara, stands on a rock facing Suzaku, holding a katana.

Review:
Kurara is a Shikigami and a crafter. Something that has never been seen before or since as far as anyone knows. Now that she knows this fundamental truth about herself, she will stop at nothing until she is able to free all Shikigami from the blood bonds to crafters that keep them captive.

Kurara is a complicated protagonist, who freely admits she has no idea what she is doing and only hopes she is making the right choices along the way. Rather than being a chosen one plotline, Rebel Fire is a tale of trying like hell to follow your own moral compass to do good.

This book was just as brilliant and fast-paced as the first one. I really enjoyed the deepening of the lore around Shikigami, and crafters. The introduction of celestial magic adds a new layer of complexity. The world building is just as rich as in the first book. Ann Sei Lin is a master at weaving complex fantasy worlds with a glimmer of reality to keep it grounded.

magicmooshka:

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

Salient discussion regarding ai harms from tumblr. Plus a reading list for anyone interested in educating themselves on the matter. #noai #aiharms #aieducation
moonshinemagpie:

I'm finding it immensely helpful to read books about AI, because my past grumblings of "it's bad for the environment" really pale in comparison to what I'm learning.

But im not finding it easier to talk about AI with the people in my life who use it. The evils are both enormous and complex. I cannot, on the spot and in casual conversation, recite the colonial and political history that led to entire towns in Chile being devastated by AI data centers. It is unseemly to bring up how many women have had miscarriages because of lack of access to drinking water worsened by data center usage in places like Uruguay. How racist surveillance of the public in South Africa has been used as training data for AI companies. How AI companies would not limit their use of drinking water even during Arizona's most severe drought in history. How this whole paragraph isn't even scratching the surface of what is evil about AI companies.

It's actually so much harder now to articulate my absolute hatred or to know how to approach these conversations.

EDIT: So far this year I've read, in order of quality/relevance:

Empire of AI by Karen Hao
More Everything Forever by Adam Becker
Enshittification by Cory Doctorow
More Than Words by John Warner
planning to read these next:

Data Empire by Roopika Risam; not sure how specifically AI-focused it will be
The Age of Surveillance Capitalism
Pollution Is Colonialism
It's been important for me to learn about AI companies more deeply because I see a lot of AI critics ask questions that reveal that they don't really understand what's going on in basic ways, and that makes me nervous about whether we're all going to be able to organize against it.

Example: In response to an article about Sam Altman asking Congress to regulate AI, I saw a lot of comments like, "What, even HE doesn't think his own company can get its shit together?! He's that desperate for outside help?"

And that's not what's going on. Sam Altman talks to Congress because he's directing the conversation around AI concerns. He wants laws passed that make it harder for other companies, especially Chinese companies, to compete with OpenAI. He wants us all to be worried about theoretical future AI models triggering apocalyptic scifi scenarios because that kind of panic distracts us from tackling the problems that are actually happening now, like extreme surveillance, water shortages, destruction of land, and abuse of workers.

Anyway, even if you hate AI—especially if you hate AI—it's important to learn about what's happening.

Really good point here. at one point in time any keyboard also by default had braille on it. #accessibility
Replacing physical buttons and controls with touchscreens also means removing accessibility features. Physical buttons can be textured or have Braille and can be located by touch and don't need to be pressed with a bare finger. Touchscreens usually require precise taps and hand-eye coordination for the same task.

Many point-of-sale machines now are essentially just a smartphone with a card reader attached and the interface. The control layout can change at a moment's notice and there are no physical boundaries between buttons. With a keypad-style machine, the buttons are always in the same place and can be located by touch, especially since the middle button has a raised ridge on it.

Buttons can also be located by touch without activating them, which enables a "locate then press" style of interaction which is not possible on touchscreens, where even light touches will register as presses and the buttons must be located visually rather than by touch.

When elevator or door controls are replaced by touch screens, will existing accessibility features be preserved, or will some people no longer be able to use those controls?

Who is allowed to control the physical world, and who is making that decision?

"I'm sorry we never got a chance to meet, but getting this note from Dolly really had a an impact on me. She definitely didn't have to take the time to do it. Even for a kid who mostly listened to rap music, she was an icon. A superstar in every sense. Rest easy Dolly. And thank you for the kind words."

Dolly's Letter:
Marshall (Eminem),
Congratulations on your induction into the Rock & Roll hall of Fame. Your performance was amazing and everybody said so. Even though I don't know a lot about rap music, I've come to know that you are the very best at it. Aside from that I hope what I have to say will not seem weird or strange to you but I have always felt some unexplained connection to you like I know you somehow. I had hoped to meet you at the show but you know how nuts those things are, personally I hate 'em and I missed my chance but maybe someday we'll meet. In the meantime, keep doing what you're doing because you do it so well and no matter how complex your world may be just know you are very special and touch people in ways you don't even know.

Found this on a post about new endo spit tests being a thing. #endometriosis #healthcare why is Canada so extremely behind in its knowledge of endo. PS this company is also biased in thinking it only affects uterus havers.
Via tumblr user scooplery
"Endometriosis is not a gynecological disease at all. The reason it has been classed as gynecological for the last century is because the lesions need estrogen to grow. The strongest concentration of estrogen is around the ovaries, obviously. But the lesions aren't picky at all; it doesn't NEED ovarian or uterine tissue to develop. Just estrogen.

It is a full body disease that causes highly inflammatory lesions that can attack any kind of tissue, anywhere in the body. It has been found in the lungs and the liver. It REGULARLY sets up shop in the digestive system, getting cozy around the bowels and rectum, often requiring extensive surgery (including bowel resections requiring ostomy bags) to restore "normal" digestive function. Mine ate through my entire right ovary, no original ovarian structure left. Just a hemorrhagic cyst, full of rotting clotted period blood.

It just doesn't kill us reliably or quickly enough to be considered cancer. But in my experience and in the experience of other people with stage 3 to 4 endometriosis that I have spoken with, we suffer just as much."

#bookreview in ALT. Spoiler I have a favorite. #booksky
Where kindness Lives: A Women's Fiction Anthology by Janet Koops et al. Cover is a Monet school style painting with the title and authors' names in the foreground.

This anthology series may be fairly broad in terms of included genres, however the themes are eerily identical in many of the tales.

The standout piece for me is The Irish Library in Kilkenny by Christy Matheson. It follows an often overlooked character of Irish folklore. Fionn mac Cumhaill's (Finn McCool) first Queen Sadhbh (Saba). The rich history behind it gives this particular story a vibrancy, and urgency, that make it seem full of life. I can't wait to explore more of Matheson's fiction.

The subjects covered in this anthology are rather focused; on women's agency in their own lives. This is explored through themes of others' attempts at control and how the characters respond to it. My only gripe is that they didn't include more author's from outside the US.

Definite overtones of the veldt, or the other way round depending on which was published first. Highly disturbing that the house doesn't realize that it is either abandoned or the residents are dead. Further proof we should not outsource our lives to machines and algorithms.

The Lady of Shalott. #bookreview in ALT #booksky
Cover for The Lady of Shalott by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Featuring the Lady sitting very much alive in a boat floating on the river.

This poem actually has two versions and once I learned that I read both. I personally prefer the 1833 to the 1842. The 1833 keeps the focus more on the Lady and her courtly duties as a tapestry weaver. While the 1842 has slightly modernized prose and focuses a bit more on Lancelot. I feel that shifting the focus off the Lady, while useful in terms of illustrating societal pressures, does a disservice to the original.

OP already said this so I’m just reiterating to emphasize:

The golden rule of information sharing on the internet is: What would happen if someone saw this who wanted to hurt me?
If the answer is that it would make it easier to harass you, identify you, contact you, or god forbid find you, don’t put it online. You can’t fully control who does and does not see that information--not even with privacy settings.Hey. Minors following me. Internet safety is key!! NEVER include these in your bio/byf:

Medical diagnoses - this is nobody's business but yours. You don't owe anyone an explanation for why you are the way that you are
Trauma - same reason as above
Triggers - people can use these against you! Don't give people tools to hurt you. No one has to know what tags you block. Just block tags to stay safe!
Age - age is okay for adults to include but is iffy when you're a teen. Predators want this information, don't give people more than they need. Just state that you're a minor, that's all that anyone needs to know.
In general: stay safe. If you're not comfortable with every stranger out there having access to this information, you shouldn't post it on the internet.

Play devil's advocate and ask yourself about what would happen if someone searched for your information with intent to hurt you. You do NOT owe anyone an explanation!

Cover for The Honjin Murders: features a red background with a white circle. A knife sticks out of the white circle.

This book was absolutely a product of it's time. attitudes towards women are blatant in that most female characters are either window dressing or just there to provide exposition. It is also very obvious in the attitudes towards virginity and purity being one and the same.

The Honjin Murders is the debut Detective Kosuke Kindaichi novel, Translated by Louise Heal Kawai. The story follows the brutal slaying of a couple on their wedding night. In a room locked from the inside. With mysterious music being played the entire time. There's family drama, bumbling local police, an outsider young upstart detective, and secrets best left buried.

Due to this story being a translation and my woeful lack of Japanese language skills, I don't know how faithful a translation this is. Based on what I read this was an entirely predictable story, and easy read. figuring out how the author felt about the attitudes of his time was much more murky.

all in all a decently enjoyable read.

Okay, okay. I waited a tad to marshal my thoughts. They are: Holy Shit. Damn. Read This book. Pterodactyl screech.

The plot and pacing of this novel builds so slowly that you almost miss it as it speeds up. The layering and nuance provided by the decision to bounce back and forth through time was impeccable. Revealing details of the past at the exact right moment for them to become relevant to the present *chef's kiss*.

I already knew going in that I would love the writing style, having read other works by this author. The characters are so deliciously complicated and human. Suzanne is a raw nerve still processing her father's recent passing. She embarks on a bat out of hell journey that can only be described as running. But, what, dear reader, is she really running from. A by all accounts flaccid marriage, her grief, or that one thing she witnessed when she was eleven.

Full disclosure, there is a moderately graphic scene or two featuring drug use, and violence. What this book is emphatically not, however, is horror. It just isn't. What it is, is a beautiful coming of age story presented in a way that is raw, and human, and messy. This book will rip your heart out in the best way possible.
