And I’d add this. If you’re against all this anti trans bullshit, you need to speak out. Do it for the kids. So many trans kids frightened right now. Some of them will have loving families, some will not. I think they need to hear your voices. I think that’s important. Just a challenge x

The moment Peters and his ilk start addressing our rates of intimate partner violence, sexual violence, pay equity, safeguarding access to abortion…is the moment I say Well done, now you’re addressing women’s rights. Cis men are the biggest predators of cis women. The end.

1/4 Trauma stays in the body. This morning she messages to ask me to take her to the medical clinic. She has been super anxious for a while. Overwhelmed. Tried all her strategies. Nothing works. Can’t breathe. Nausea. Dizziness. She’s scared. Thinks she will die.

I haven’t seen her in person for over a year. Major depression. Anxiety. CPTSD kicking her arse. A lot of kids, both hers and whangaied. An older teen who externalises his pain and anger in harmful ways. But since last yr she’s been seeing an ACC accredited therapist. And that is huge.

For those interested. For those who have wondered exactly what the intensive work I do, looks like. And if it is safe.
Kia Ora community.
We are making a specific application to get funding for my salary - at the moment, we have some wonderful regular donors to that but we have had a number of people had to drop off because their circumstances have changed.
So there’s a large gap.

Anyway, I had asked my professional supervisor to give some specific feedback on the safety of my work. I am not specifically academically qualified to do this work - I am not a Counsellor, a therapist, or a social worker. I don’t claim to be, and I am very careful to make sure that I don’t overstep those boundaries. After 12 years of doing this, I know my lane.

But what is that lane, you may well ask.

I often talk about the intensive work I do with the aunties whānau women. But what does that look like?

I would like to share with you what she said so that you may better understand what this work of mine actually looks like.

“Since August 2017 I have been supervising Jackie Clark’s work under the auspices of The Aunties Board of Trustees.
Jackie’s ongoing contribution to keeping safe the women she works with involves treading a fine compassionate line along the interface between dependency (financial and emotional) and growth towards self-responsibility and dignified assertiveness.
One of Jackie’s difficult triaging decisions hinges around this assessment of each woman. And her willingness to grow and change her life.
The main work is always to do with Psycho-Education, building boundaries, assertiveness and Identity formation beyond victimhood.
This transformation involves a carefully titrated mixture of trust and vulnerability along with skilfully delivered challenges and resources to develop self-agency, to stand up for themselves and their children.
Alongside of this, Jackie’s work and careful focus has been instrumental in assisting most of the women to begin Counselling for childhood trauma. This of course has the powerful knock on effect of empowering both self awareness and safer parenting.
This ongoing process raises self-esteem, self-agency, and safer parenting practices.
With a spin off for healthier relationships for the next generations.
In my view, this work is outstanding in keeping women safe.”

She’s starting ACC sensitive claims therapy tomorrow. She’s terrified that the Therapist won’t believe her. It takes her so much to open up to anyone who’s not me or her sons. I reassure her that she will be believed. She cries. What if they don’t? she says.

FGC, family group conferences, a tokenistic not often useful mechanism used by OT to check the Family voice box. Hui Ā whanau - a mechanism id never heard of before, and just taken part in. Excellent. This from a facilitator: let’s give her a piece of our hearts and not our minds.

We seem to be in a place in the world right now w big bad things happening all at the same time. I offer a small win. None of the women did well academically, too much trauma, a lot of them told they’re “dumb”. Those once critics proved wrong by genetics. Fonua. Yr 9 Class president.

In the last 30 yrs, I have not had had many positive interactions with OT. This morning was different. Why? Because the meeting was with two lovely humans who work under OT in capacity as kairāranga ā whanau. And as per, anything that comes from a te ao Māori perspective is what works best.

1/4 She comes to visit me with the kids. One is now 10, and one 16. They both hate going to their father. He is a cunt in a cardigan. A little white man, seemingly mild of manner. A wealthy man who made sure they’ve lived without, to punish their mum.

The single biggest thing I learned from an indigenous elder who reminded me of the difference between a western settler mindset of “I have rights” and an indigenous mindset of “I have obligations”. Instead of thinking that I am born with rights, I choose to think that I am born with obligations to serve past, present, and future generations, and the planet itself.
