The Trèmalo chapel in Pont Aven, #France, has fabulous wooden grotesques. Grotesques are church carvings lurking at the tops of columns, in alcoves, or in this case along the top of the nave wall, and they depict fantasy characters, monsters, or fools…. 1/5 #medieval
Wooden beams extending across the top of the walls of a church nave. There are dragons biting the ends of the beams. Between the beams, lining the top of the nave walls at intervals, are carved faces and characters.

I love the sight of a passage tomb in the morning. #megalith #neolithic
Late Neolithic passage tomb near Plouhinec, in the Finistère Department of Brittany in France. It consists of a corridor made of flat stones that are very roughly 1.5 meters tall and wide. The stones are upright on their edges and placed in two parallel rows to form the walls of the passage. The stones are not uniform size. They are capped by another series of flat stones, so the structure is like a square-shaped tube. One end of the tomb is blocked with yet another flat stones, and the other end is open. Human remains and flints were found in the chamber formed by blocking the end of the passage. Photo mine.

Laaddenhøj Jættestue: Jættestue (Passage Grave) in Holbæk. The eastern chamber is quite small, 3.1 m in length, 2.1 m wide. and 1.4 m high. The western chamber (seen at front) is similar but without a capstone, approx 3.0 by 2.5 and 1.7 metres high. 📷 ShamrockStone More:

I have found nirvana. #France
Clear plastic bag that says “Les macarons de Philoméne.” Inside the bag is a citron (lemon) macaron. A bakery selling macarons in Quimper, France. It is in a cream-colored half timbered house that’s4 stores tall. There are candy-colored chairs and tables out front. There is another half-timbered house on one side and a stone house on the other.

From tonight's Hookland talk on Re-enchantment as Resistance at @treadwells-books.bsky.social. 'Folklore is often the wild frontier of belief, the place where wonder may still live. Here be Woodwoses, here be Harrowhounds, the ghosts which whisper wisdom.' #FolkloreThursday
Folklore can ignite enchantment within us. Enchantment that fuels our imaginations. Enchantment that shifts our consciousness, allows us to envisage new and better worlds. It begins the process of manifesting the changes we desire. Re-enchanted, the world is full of new, feral possibilities. Re-enchanted our imagination is an accessible superpower.

The stories we intentionally absorb, the stories we select to tell ourselves, they allow us to live in the world differently. They allow us to make and remake the world differently.

Folklore is often the wild frontier of belief, the place where wonder may still live. Here be Woodwoses, here be Harrowhounds, the ghosts which whisper wisdom. We need this space. We ache for the sublime. For re-enchantment is an assertion of wonder and the numinosity of our relationships with landscape. Re-enchantment is an assertion of our collective ability to both imagine and experience better worlds. As a refusal of despair, as a lensing of hope. In re-enchantment we stop dreaming of inevitable apocalypse and find the permissive space to tell stories of hope.

Re-enchantment is personal metamorphosis. The space in which we grow glowing red eyes to patrol our communities against this long night of authoritarian pisspuffinry. The space in which we develop iron-hard fur, immune to the curses reductionist racists, misogynists, homophobes and AI cultists throw at us. Re-enchantment as the permissive circle where we can voyage into ourselves and find the marvels and bravery we need to deal with this age of violent bruising. This is why I walk the territory of folklore. Wear my witch-cloak of swan feathers, hold hag stone to my eye. This is why I created Hookland as a home for stories, a community for Fully-grown Changelings.

Ancient and beautiful amber pendants worn by hunter-gatherers during the Danish Mesolithic some 10,000 years ago! 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows three glossy, bright orange, drop-shaped pieces of amber arranged in a row against a dark background in a museum display case. Each piece of amber is decorated with finely incised patterns. The smalleest piece on the left is decorated with a comb motif- three horizontal lines with short vertical lines on top. The largest piece in the middle has a patchwork of alternating incised rectangles, and the piece on the right has four evenly spaced horizontal rows a Ross the surface made up of drilled pits. Each piece of amber has a hole at the top suggesting it was attached to a cord to be worn as jewellery or suspended.

Amber has many properties which may have been associated with 'magic'. For example, when rubbed against fur, amber produces static electricity which can give off sparks in the dark, make hair stand on end, and attract small things towards it.

These pieces are part of the collections of the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. They are currently on loan at the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle, Germany for the ‘Shamaness’ temporary exhibition.

As twilight is heralded in last acts of solar alchemy, spirits wake in the walls of St. Mary in the Meadows. They phase through stone in search of one final kiss of sun, one final bit of warmth before a lengthening night. You can hear them gently sigh, mutter their sorrows. – #DAKilroy

Happy fall #equinox. One of my students once noted how people often say they seek “balance,” but true balance is rare. In terms of light and dark, we only get two almost balanced days a year—the fall and spring equinoxes. Even then, day is still a bit longer because of atmospheric refraction… 1/2
