I wish they hadn't have used it, but atleast they were open and clear about how they used it and where their boundaries with it are. The old IGN interview article was fairly clear.

To be specific they used an AI text-to-speech during script development to hear how well the dialogue flowed. No Gen material was ever actually in the game.

There is a possibility they brought in those cast members for 1 session to create the TTS Models off their voices, so that they are still partially compensated for the draft work. Its how some VAs have asked for such a process to be done, but I do not know if that is how they did it.

The way the article reads, they do 1-3 sessions as a sort of table read to work on the script, BEFORE recording the final version that goes in the game. Its sounds like they did the GenTTS to replace the table reads while doing the initial drafts.

It would cost them time. Reading it aloud to a recorder, listening to it back, adjusting, repeat, would likely add tens if not hundreds of hours to dev time. Copy, paste, play, would save a ton of time and thus money. I know its possible with the tech they used to have brought in the VAs who-

In the linked article, and additional ones that went more in depth, they normally budget 1-3 test sesh with a few cast members to work on this temp dialogue. So, yes, a few out of the couple hundred VAs working on the game lost a couple sessions. Unless, they did a sesh with them to make the models.

I'm not for this kinda tech to be used wide scale, replacing VAs en masse. But in this use case, where the social and ecological impact is minimal, and it is providing the writers a simple tool to better their art, I can understand it.

Because what they used was more than simple text-to-speech, it was a more Generative type closer to how Deep-Fakes work. Its still takes more computing power than simple T2S, but from my understanding can run locally not relying on poluting data centres. I believe 3/5 on the REAL AI SCALE.

I say this as someone who hates GenAI. The way they described how they used it sounds fine. -text to speech models can be run locally and without stolen content so the emissions and plagerizism issues are out -at worst a few VAs out of hundreds lost a few extra sessions. Kinda not the worst.

They used Generative Text-to-Speech to test how dialogue sounded spoken aloud, while writing the script. Idk if this counts as slop truly. T2S models like this can be run locally, not using data centers. Everything in the game will be written and performed by people. So is it slop? I say no.
