As she walked through the Tribunal's hall, the roar of the crowd reached her ears before she saw them. Hundreds of voices chanted in unison, their shouts echoing off the stone walls. It seemed anyone who could afford to attend, did just that. It was a trial turned spectacle—to see the Warrior of Light fighting the Archbishop's personal guard. Most would lay eyes on the Warrior's prowess for the first time, save for those she had fought beside with at the Steps of Faith.

She hesitated before the exit, realizing she has never battled anyone in front of a crowd before. She and Calla practiced together in the village square sometimes, although there weren't nearly as many spectators as there were outside at this very moment.

One breath. Two breaths. Three. Four. Seren inhaled deeply against her rapidly beating heart, remembering Lord Haurchefant's words and his cheerful disposition right before she went into the barracks:

Should you begin to lose heart, look for me in the stands, and I shall cheer so loud, you will wonder how you could ever have contrived to doubt yourself!

She could still feel the grip of his hand on hers, holding her tight.

Now, are you ready?

She glanced up at the bright archway, a smile breaking across her face. Then she stepped out onto the light.

To go whither the wild rose blooms…

Haurchefant reined in his chocobo, halting before the Haillenarte encampment.

It had been far too long since he'd been to the Sea of Clouds, and he breathed in the fresh air before dismounting. Above him, the sky stretched out bright and blue, perfect weather for the trek.

Its enough that it floods his mind with memories of his childhood in Coerthas. Swimming in the lakes with his brothers, catching trout in the afternoons, lying in the grass to map out constellations at night. Sometimes, he wished they had been spared the Calamity's eternal chill. He did not deny that winter held its own beauty, but he missed being surrounded by greenery and the myriad colors of wildflowers peering through the earth. Their absence left a haunting ache in his heart.

Winters in Coerthas had always been harsh. Now they were endless.

All it took was one misstep, a mound she thought was sure footing for her to go tumbling down into a valley, furthest away from Camp Dragonhead. And worst of all, her bow had been cleaved in half, now lying defeatedly on the ground next to her.

It wasn’t just any weapon—it was gifted to her by her sister. There is a joke that a viera is always handed a bow before their first nameday, which wasn’t entirely false. Her blood sister was the best archer from their village, and on the day Seren finally bested her, Calla handed over her own longbow.

‘I hope it brings you luck,’ she teased, implying it was the only way Seren could win. It did bring her luck after all; she survived the fall in Witchdrop.

There was no use mourning over its loss; the bow served its purpose, and nothing is meant to last forever. Still, Seren gathered up the broken pieces and bagged them up, feeling compelled to salvage what she could from her past life.

"Do not even think of dragging me over the falls. Final days or no, if I end up drenched from head to toe—" Emet-Selch started. But it was too late. The hero's feet caught onto her robe and she slipped out of sight.

Aymeric admitted to her that he used her for political gain and her response is currently my favorite. I’m still on the fence about shipping them but this wolmeric WIP gave me the chance to really dig into her thoughts and feelings about her duty as the WoL.

“The truth is—I played a part in bringing us together. It was anything but serendipitous,” he admitted. “When I first called you to the intercessory, I sought an audience with you out of political expediency.”

“You’re saying you used me…” He knew his words stung her, but she needed to hear this from him. She deserved the truth.

“Yes. Everything, from the truce with the Crystal Braves, Lady Iceheart, the Steps of Faith, and the Dragonsong War. You fought all of my battles without me having to say a word. You just accepted it. Without question. I am undeserving of your friendship and kindness.” He turned his head away from her in shame. “When I first heard of your strengths in the correspondence from Eorzea, I saw you more as a tool than a person—a pawn on my board. All to further my agenda and to secure Ishgard’s protection. I did this because I knew the Holy See would never agree to outside help, so I orchestrated a plan—manipulate the Eikon-slayer and the Braves to watch over Midgardsormr and have a first line of defense in Revenant’s Toll for the Imperial armies, before they could even step foot in Coerthas. I did all that and I—” I didn’t expect to... But he couldn’t say it—not yet.

Stunned, she stood back, gripping her elbows until her fingers blanched. Then she looked straight at him with a hardened expression. “Aymeric,” she said in a strict tone. “I’m not an idiot. I knew what you would ask when you requested my presence at Camp Dragonhead. You’re not the first dignitary to invite me to their province under false pretenses. And you certainly won’t be the last.”

It was his turn to be dismayed. “Still, I contrived our alliance to gain favor with the Holy See and my father…”

She gave him a grim smile. “I knew what you wanted before I even met you. Most people who interact with me always want something—it’s the problem with being the Warrior of Light. But I still choose who I want to help. I’m not this weak little creature that’s manipulated so easily. I go where I want to go and pick who to work with. And I chose Ishgard. To help your people. I knew the risks going for it all.”

There was only one question on his mind: “Why?”

Scoffing airily, she shook her head. “Like I said, I knew what you wanted before I even met you. Regardless of political schemes, I serve to protect. To aid those in need. That is my calling.” She looked up at him in a way that reminded him strongly of the Silver-Fuller. They were so alike, in so many ways. “Your back and forth with Alphinaud only proved your mettle to me. You went beyond your borders to safeguard your people, even if your pride took an injury. That’s what differentiates you from the rest.”

The closest one I have is when she meets Aymeric for the first time. I think it’s a decent way of describing her.

She is quiet—is the first thought Aymeric has about the Warrior of Light upon entering the intercessory. Her impact on Eorzea could be heard around the world, but she is quiet.

What did he expect? For her to be brash and loud, stumbling her entire deck on the table face up? Lord Haurchefant had even described her as a kind and generous soul, yet all Aymeric perceived was frigidity enough to rival Coerthan zephyrs.

But he had to admit—the way she held her body impressed him, in that manner that exudes confidence without declaring arrogance. And beneath the self-assured posture lay a shrewdness; the Warrior seemed a passive strategist, judging every move made and every word said. He was glad to see she was more calculating than most coin-for-hire mercenaries and added this information to the crafted persona kept in his head—once again building a board to figure out the complexities behind this hero. He’s always been nothing but thorough.

Page 3: The Warrior looks concerned and asks him what's wrong. Haurchefant still cannot get his words out. He's mesmorized by her eyes and stops himself, deciding now is not the right time to say what he wanted to say.

Page 4: Haurchefant and the Warrior leave. Haurchefant regrets not having said anything to her at the time. Later in Camp Dragonhead, he pens a letter to her.
