The Word is not publishing a September issue because of a lack of funding

Sadly, we are again short on funds to pay reporters for a September edition of The Word. We'll again be accepting donated articles for September. We're also asking people to dig deep and become $5 monthly donors so we can start publishing again. Donate at the-word.news/support/.

We encourage a $5 recurring donation. Why? 1. $5 a month is the price of one fancy coffee a month. Can you give up one iced latte a month to fund accessible news? 2. If 100 people each give $5 a month, that's $6,000 a year total. Power in numbers! 3. The best things come in small packages.

It costs about $250 a month to publish The Word. That's the majority of the @equalaccesspublicmedia.org budget right now. Without an increase in donations, publication of The Word is paused until further notice.

A message from @stacykess.bsky.social:
The Word
from Equal Access Public Media

Dear readers,

It pains me to announce that due to the financial situation of our publishing organization, Equal Access Public Media, we will be suspending publication.

We do not have the ability to pay our writers for work going forward. Until such time as we can raise funding to continue publishing, June’s issue will be our last published issue.

This was not a decision nor is this an announcement I wanted to make. Our writers work very hard. This publication is unique in covering topics of accessibility in journalism. But we are where we are because we have not been able to secure consistent funding in a time when accessibility, like diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice are considered bad, issues to be avoided, and something to be defunded.

This is not the end, just a brief pause. We will see you in the future. In the meantime, we hope you consider funding Equal Access Public Media.

With great sadness,

Stacy Kess
