t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023There's a decent museum in the guest house too. If you're into the Arts and Crafts movement, there's some Morris and Co. wallpaper and furniture, plus a couple of restored rooms. I liked this 14th century stone window looking into an Arts and Crafts lounge. /22 110
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023There's still some original red plasterwork from the 14th century in the guesthouse museum. /21 100
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023The guest house was in better condition, mainly because Sir Lowthian Bell decided to restore it (and reconstruct the monk's cell). Here it is from the gardens. /20 100
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023Can't remember if this is the church or chapter house I'm standing in. /18 100
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023Once that bell rings, you've got to go to church. A huge covered cloister once connected all those doorways and led to the church and chapterhouse and all the useful places monks had to be. /17 100
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023Upstairs, we find the workshop! Spinning, weaving, copying books, woodwork, lots of useful activity. /16 100
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023These stairs really are steep. Believe the sign next to the fireplace. You *have* to come down backwards. I am completely serious. My feet are a UK size 5 and they barely fit on the stairs. /15 100
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023Exterior view of the cell from the garden. You may notice it has more than one floor. Let's go back in and up the stairs! /14 100
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023More garden! Small fruit tree and exterior view of the glazed private cloister. /13 100
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023If you turn right at the entrance, a covered walkway leads to the monk's cell garden, freshwater drinking pipe and latrine (both plumbed in. Monastery plumbing was something else. I've seen the plans for London Charterhouse). /12 100
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023If you turn left at the entrance, there's a nice, glazed, private cloister looking out onto the cell garden. /11 100
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023Just off of this room, a narrow door leads to a place where you can rest yourself. (The Carthusian schedule is brutal.) The curtain fabric was rough and the bed was pretty solid. More of a, I *suppose* they should maybe sleep, ugh, than a place of comfort. /10 100
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023In other corner opposite the windows and desk, there is a handy place to rest both yourself and your reading materials. /9 100
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023In the same room, there's a desk by two windows. Lots of natural light. A peaceful place to write letters, or read, or work, or study. /8 100
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023That was for illustrative purpose. Back inside, now! Straight ahead is the living quarters. The fireplace in this cell is smaller than the one found in the sacrist's cell. (The sacrist had rank and more responsibility and maybe one of the few perks was a larger fireplace). /7 100
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023Laybrothers cooked, were responsible for upkeep and general day-to-day activities under the watch of the Procurator. (Laybrothering was a prestigious position. Bishops retired to take up the job.) Among other jobs, they delivered food into hatches like this so the monks wouldn't have to interact /6 100
t.h. dray ♠️ @thdray.bsky.social · 07/08/2023View of the church with its bell tower and some cells in the background. This is the first thing you see when you enter through the guest house into the priory grounds. (I might call it a charterhouse sometimes. I'm more used to that.) /4 100
