Our politicians are boring our country to death
What happened to the politicians who used to inspire and excite us - and who had a bit more than just a nodding acquaintance with real life?

The country is sick to death of Brexit, and, if Burnham can reverse it, every one of us — irrespective of our politics — will owe him.

Burnham has twigged his premiership depends on rejoining the EU
Few, if any, politicians foresaw with such deadly accuracy what Brexit would mean for Britain than Andy Burnham - and that’s why he knows his longevity and his legacy will depend on reversing it

About time. Since 2016, every government we’ve had has imposed ever higher taxes — and still more draconian cuts to public services — in the full knowledge they have a button they could press that could transform our ailing economy overnight. The button is marked Reverse Brexit.

Islamophobia is rising – and Britain’s politicians have been dangerously complacent in tackling it | Arun Kundnani
Mainstream figures have been enabling anti-Muslim racism, creating the ideal conditions for the rise of hard-right political parties, says Arun Kundnani, editorial director of Monthly Review Press

You’ve got to go back to Der Stürmer — another German-owned newspaper, much loved indeed by Hitler — to find a newspaper as hostile to our country and our interests as the Daily Telegraph.

Very good point, Matthew — I remember too the fuss that was made when Obama gently suggested ahead of the EU referendum that Brexit may not be a terribly good idea and the continual commentary on our domestic affairs we are now getting from Trump.

We need to get away from the idea — though I get it’s an expedient one for Islamophobes, anti-Semites and the far right generally — that members of any faith all have to be identical in every way, sharing exactly the same views and living their lives in precisely the same way.

thattimwalker.bsky.social @thattimwalker.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
To abhor this is to be human, it is not anti-Semitic. Finally, that’s accepted by the government. Now they need to think again about the pro-Palestine protestors sentenced as terrorists.

The Chancellor’s optimism and his eagerness to turn the corner on a decade of stagnation and short-term growth spurts has to begin with a stated intention to join the EU, because that is the only long-term plan capable of delivering real change.

Interesting from the Financial Times. I remain of the view Burnham’s a fundamentally decent guy and the internet’s rendered his job fundamentally impossible. I’d add, too, it’s interesting no one talks of the FT closing: maybe the one paper that’s managed to keep true to itself.

What no one has asked Farage is whether any conditions were attached to Harborne’s £5m ‘gift’. I think it’s in the public interest to find out whether there’s a contract. Definitely one for journalists to ask at Reform’s conference in the week ahead.
