Honestly think a lot of people just can't come to grips with the idea of a capes show taking these kids of swings. But man, it nailed everyone out of the fucking park.

Look, I get why there are folks who don't like Lanterns. The True Detective vibe isn't gonna be for everyone. But I'm sorry guys, this show is a fuckin' gem. If the final episode can stick the landing, I will call the best live action Superhero yet (yes, including over Watchmen).

That left my wife with no good candidates. The senior partner told her hire one anyway. The person she hired lasted three weeks, because they were, as she noted, very obviously incompetent.

My wife was recently hiring a paralegal. Only one strong candidate applied. She offered them the position, and they said thanks, and that they needed a couple of days to consider. After one day, the senior partner told her to rescind the offer, as waiting two whole days meant they were "entitled."

Answer all questions with anecdotes about my local bar. "I don't know. The school choice thing, it's like how Angie was telling me, they used to put down sawdust on the floor of the Goat and Compass. Soaked up the tobacco spit and vomit." *shakes head* "Not like today, that's for sure."

Henceforth, the only ethical outreach is going to door and making your neighbors watch the Giant Douche vs Turd Sandwich south park episode.

It's been a weird couple of year for me, a guy who whenever he sees "SWE" has to wait a good three minutes before his brain can read it as anything other than "Sex Worker Extraodiaire"

Could you elaborate on this? I've been running a text RPG for six years, and I haven't noticed this. Do you mean in "word trees" in terms of having a more consistent vocabulary? Or in terms of being able to have responses to what players chose to do?

Ok, this is very intriguing! As a GM, I've had lots of non-TTRPG friends tell me that AI must be great for running games. And, not for lack of trying, I've yet to come up with a use case for any of it. What have you had success with Genuinely interested!

The one thing I'll say for a Vance 2028 run is that no one's memory of him is going to improve with time. Rs will look at him as the guy from the Trump term where everything went to shit, and he'll become W-levels radioactive.

Robert H Jackedson @thatotherjim.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Yeah, had this argument with my fam this weekend, and for me it came down to the fact that Vance may be the only one dumb enough to actually run in 2028. (Vivek Ramaswamy will also try, but will run straight into the wall of being Vivek Ramaswamy)

Totally baseless extrapolation, but if what we see here stays true and "safe" red seats have less R proportional turnout than in purple/blue, we may be in store for some weird surprises, even if Dems lose a couple close races.

Yeah, Trump has fucked the fundamentals into a place where the status quo is "shit just gets worse for Rs," so instead of just riding this out and taking the L they're gonna try some WaCKy bULlSHiT that will have a ~0% chance of helping but may very well make things even worse still

We also need a new strategy for staying engaged with voters. Cautiously optimistic we'll see more Kat Abughazaleh-esque efforts to build lasting structures.

I'm also skeptical of how much of the New Deal era success was due to good policy alone. FDR also had an extremely savvy public outreach strategy, and was waaaaaaay more proactive at regulating media than modern Dems seem to have a stomach for so far.

Def true for most of the ones on top. But I've met enough upper-middle folks in national media to know that at least some of them are plagued by the insecurity that they're class-traitors to their middle-America roots, and get a *lot* of validation from anti-woke-scolding.

On the one hand, I'm very skeptical abou this. But on the other, I'm very, very curious if there is a threshold at which a lot of GOP voters look at the likelihood of Ds winning all over the place and just say "what's the point" and don't vote.

I think there's a good chance many folks laid from health insurers will end up in gov roles! If Dems are smart, they should create some kind of pathway for just that! But there are still going to be *lots* of people for whom that is not going to work, and we should be ready with answers for them.

To be clear, I am in no way saying this is a reason to *not* do M4A. We should do M4A. But we also need to be thinking *now* about how to manage the blowback so we don't get Tea Party 2.0 just in time for 2010's nostalgia to hit.

Robert H Jackedson @thatotherjim.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Oh, for sure, we should 1000% still do M4A. But we should also start thinking *now* about how we are going to counter-message when sad videos of former BCBS employees leaving their offices with cardboard boxes of their personal effects are playing on cable news for months.

Is there any good data to point to that shows the relationship between a president's approval and the turnout among members of their party during midterms? Or would trying to graph that rely too heavily on shaky exit poll data to be meaningful?

The LLM Doom/Hype cycle is so bloody exhausting. Everytime I feel mostly settled that it's basically a nifty coding trick, a Very Serious Person says "oh shit no it's real this time guys" and for a week I'm like "fuck am *I* the one in a bubble??" but no it's always cultists and grifters again.

Thinking more about it, seems likely this is an attempt to reverse engineer the Sydney Sweeney thing: make an ad that upsets a lot of people, but with enough plausible deniability that the debate makes it viral, the buzz outweigh any negative PR. If so, we're gonna see more of this kinda thing.

For sure, nothing wrong with seeing it differently. A layman could take this photo and have no idea it would upset anyone. But a professional photographer, not just snapping a photo, but staging it? With a creative director and brand manager behind them? And no one raised an alarm? Idk...

I know it would probably reflect changes only of a very small group, but I'd be curious to see how those engagements might key into early indicators of enthusiasm/momentum.

Honestly I'd be super interested to know how much engagement people have with politics over time, how they engage/disengage. How much time do folks spend reading the news? Talking to friends? If they decide to donate/volunteer, how early and often?

Me, yesterday: I should just turn off bsky and vote Nov 3 Me, 8:45am today: ID has ~1m RV, ~63% GOP, ~12%D, ~25% Ind. Only ~500k consistently vote in midterms, so in a slightly lower turnout environment for the GOP but Ds turn out at 90%, and 65% of Ind break for Achillies we could expct
