Back to back new horror games baby Hellraiser: Revival feels very frenetic and fast paced after playing Townfall, but it also lacks Townfall's deeper ideas and more gripping atmosphere. This is a budget RE game, through and through. And, by that standard, it's solid! But, that's about it.

I have very mixed feelings on Townfall. There is a great horror game in here about corporate callousness, guilt, and helplessness in the face of overwhelming tragedy. But, it's bogged down by gameplay that grinds the pacing to a halt and provides the player with frustratingly few ways to handle it.

A lot of the responses to Lanterns have only confirmed what I already learned from Star Wars: many nerds are genuinely incapable of engaging with these characters and stories beyond just action figures and toys being smashed together. Also, nerd shit being this mainstream was a mistake lol

Lanterns was pretty good! I've never been much of a GL fan, but I really enjoyed the show as a character drama and sci-fi mystery.

The humor and absurdity in RE games comes from everything being played straight, but in the movie the constant jokes about being bad with guns and Umbrella being comically stupid only served to take me out of the moment and remind me that I'm watching the Resident Evil Video Game Movie.

Resident Evil was a very interesting experience for me. I ultimately walked away fairly negative on it despite being pretty consistently impressed by Cregger's filmmaking. The guy knows how to make something compelling to watch, the meta commentary and style of humor just didn't hit for me at all.

Also, on a personal note, stop doing this to Bane. He's big, he's not the Hulk. I get that they're using the Kelley Jones covers as a reference, but there's a reason those were the just the covers and not the actual interior art.

That's the context that's missing here. I'm worried that the story about why violent, edgy antiheroes are bad actually is going to just end up being about how cool and badass it is when superheroes beat the shit out of people. Guess we'll see how parts 2 and 3 are handled.

The movie is also really trying for that R rating, which is ironic given that the entire point of Knightfall was to be a critique of the edgy, hyperviolent antiheroes of the late 80s/early 90s. This is also why using Kelley Jones' art as the basis for the art style kind of misses the point.

It all ends up feeling like a checklist. Things happen because this is Knightfall and those things have to happen, as opposed to this feeling like the natural endpoint to several issues of build up. Absolutely destroys the film's pacing and it continually relies on stilted, expositional dialogue.

Knightfall (the movie) doesn't have that luxury. Rather than just letting Bane show up and get to the meat of the story, we have to spend a large chunk of the opening devoted to his backstory. And, that backstory is so abridged that it actively works against Bane being compelling or believable.

Azrael, Bane's existence, and Bruce's history with prior Robins were already established within the continuity before the events of Knightfall so when Knightfall properly starts, it doesn't need to waste time with introductions. This is an advantage of continuity heavy story telling.

I feel like Knighfall (the comic), while very good, kind of falls apart without the continuity and context around it. So much abridging and awkward exposition has to be dumped into this film just to make it function and that's all it really does: function.
