Advertisement in Dolly magazine, September 1993. Note you could apply to do a course in "modelling, charm, personality". I'm so curious as to the course structure and contents.
An advertisement from within the September issue of Dolly magazine. The advertiser is "Pam Arnold Centre" and it is offering lessons in 'nanny finishing', inlcuding 6 or 12 month professional courses, childcare, and a correspondence offering. The 'vocational courses' include an offering of 'modelling, charm, personality', 'tv, film, acting, radio' and correspondence options.

A plant in the garden has been using the clothes line by putting out little tendrils and wrapping around the line as it progresses forward. Discovered now that it’s spring and warm enough to hang clothes outside again.
A vine from a plant in the garden has grown over winter and is now using our washing line to travel. Here you can see the tendrils wrapping around the clothes line.

Current nighttime fiction read - there is no anti memetics division by qntm. Interesting world so far, easy to read prose, good chapter length and pacing.
The cover of “There is no anti memetics division” by qntm. The cover has a deer with too many eyes in the centre of the page standing on some water with a sunset on the horizon

Speaking of ‘pick up a pencil’, my husband and I took a drawing class earlier this year. We were given a photo of two pears to look at and draw. It was not easy, but we were given time and shown how to think about it. This is my work after an hour. Everyone in the class could do this or better.
A pencil drawing of two pears. The one on the left is upright, the one on the right is laying down. They have a gradient showing the light that comes from the left hand side, and shadow across them including underneath. It’s obvious that they are pears.

Bevmarks, in Victoria Australia, apparently charges $100 to deliver a pillow locally. I called the store to double check, because I figured something was faulty. That's the real figure. $100. I just... what.

Once again, Chloe is here to assist with study.
A calico cat has flopped herself over a pile of academic papers on a dining room table. She stares at the ceiling daring you to move her.

Working my way through a recent introductory text on language models and communication, making sure I haven’t missed anything for my thesis. Technically this is still “work”; delightful.
Reading “Communicative AI” by Coeckelbergh and Gunkel on the couch with my cat Chloe snuggled up.

Today I am learning about the bears from Katmai National Park so that I may vote in Fat Bear Week. explore.org/fat-bear-week

Today is “read a pile of literature” day. Chloe is helping.

Daisy has, throughout winter, decided to snuggle underneath my knitted blanket. She tunnels under there at least once per day and then just fully relaxes.

This is a sculpture called “Chuffing around”, which has been my favourite piece in my hometown’s art gallery for many years. I didn’t know the name of it until a month ago when I mentioned to a friend that I had been thinking about it again: she knew the name of it immediately, which felt magical.

I’m on holiday this week, visiting family and attending the Democracy Innovation Festival in Adelaide. I brought four books with me and zero laptops (so that I can’t work on the sly!) My first read is “The beginning comes after the end” by Rebecca Solnit. I am enjoying it.

I’m about to start writing my next chapter for my thesis. I’ve spent the past month doing a dive into the literature for this section, going back and forth to my data, deciding on what I am seeing and how it connects to theory. Aiming for a first draft by Wednesday!
Four piles of papers sit on a wooden desk; one pile sitting on top of a laptop. The closest is titled “Anthropomorphising AI”

My weekend read, fresh from the bookshop today. “The Incandescent” by Emily Tesh. I’m just starting chapter four. I am really glad I picked this up, it’s easy to read and an interesting story so far.
A bright pink book with white and yellow text and what looks like a bird made of black smoke on the cover in front of a yellow magical diagram. The book is called “The Incandescent” by Emily Tesh

Taking a break from chapter revisions to go do an excellent activity. Delicious crepes for breakfast, and now delicious art with @me.jamespicone.name

Baked a shortbread recipe from BBC Good Food in my countertop oven. Took less than an hour + cooling time: ~10 mins to prep and get things mixed, 40 mins in the oven. I didn’t have lemon, so I subbed in vanilla extract. Definitely worth trying. The recipe: www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/lemo...
The lemon shortbread sits in a round pan, with fork holes all over it to allow it to cook properly. The lemon shortbread after cooling and slicing. A hand selects a piece; several are already gone from the pan.

There is a sweetness that is added when you are reading on the couch on a winter afternoon and a cat chooses to join you.
A small white cat with black markings sits in a person’s lap on a grey blanket on a couch. The person reads a book.

Enjoying sitting with this to work out when the trains will run this week.
The disruptions for Werribee and Williamstown are broken into four slots, with multiple sections impacting some days.

Public Transport Victoria’s disruptions site is less than helpful because they’ve entered in the disruptions under four different categories, which means later ones don’t show up in the morning. See below that evening disruptions are concealed due to the time they start. Not ideal, really.

"Untitled" (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) by Félix Gonzáles-Torres comes to mind immediately. There’s such an interesting tension in inviting audience participation (to take a candy) and in the variety of ways exhibitors can build the artwork. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%22Unti...
A man reaches into a corner filled with candy.

The candy pile is the art installation by Felix Gonzalez-Torres. Its title is ‘"Untitled" (Portrait of Ross in L.A.)’ representing González-Torrés' partner Ross Laycock, who died of aids related complications in 1991.

The artwork is an interactive installation with multiple configurations determined by the exhibitor.

Sometimes I forget how nice it is to spend a cold winter evening in bed with a book, fresh tea, a blanket, and a cat friend. This is incredibly pleasant.
A white and black cat sleeps on a red and white blanket which rests on a larger green blanket. A person sits in the POV position holding a cup of herbal tea which rests on an open book. The general vibe is “cosy”.

My two cats are the best study buddies I could hope for. #caturday
Daisy is a white shorthair cat with a black tail, who is sitting on a bunch of academic papers on the floor. In the background is a bookshelf. Chloe is a calico cat who is laying in front of my rainbow keyboard being pet. She’s bapping a silver pen nearby my mousepad.

My Friday project for the past few months has been the collection of the Australian ‘Dolly’ magazine advice column using the State Library of Victoria collection. The column begins in 1971 with “What Should I Do?” By 2010 it has a different name but the column continues to thrive 40 years on.
