dude, i’ve been in IT since the 90s, WAY before genAI. if a deadline was approaching, you had crunch time. working all night in the office (there was no remote work). 100-hr weeks. and at the end of all that, you didn’t magically get paid more, you got a pizza party & the same expectation next time.

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

people don’t generally get paid more for getting more work done, either, though (at least not in salaried jobs), they just get higher expectations (and MAYBE if they’re lucky, a slightly bigger bonus)

take a minute to think about the relationship between quality & quantity. you can’t have high levels of both with the same resources. if you’re pumping out quantity at a far higher pace than any human brain can reasonably keep up with, quality WILL suffer, & i don’t care how “good” the model is.

this also means it would be far cheaper for me to use A PAY PHONE than my own cell phone to set my redelivery time. if i even knew where to find one these days. 😓

sagawa’s redelivery web system has been down for maintenance all day, so i was about to call & use their automated phone system instead until i read the charges for it. ¥8.5/180s, except for cell phones which are ¥20 per 30s. jfc 0570 is the 1-900 of japan isn’t it. 😑

両面テープ? faaaancy. mine just makes tape loops (or tapes directly to the wall with entirely unnecessarily long pieces of masking tape (we go through a LOOOT of tape) 😓)
a hallway wall with no less than 9 drawings of various things (mostly mount fuji, rockets, rainbows, & faces) in crayon, marker, or colored pencil, taped to it with overly large pieces of black masking tape. a smaller piece of paper labeled “ART WALL” in crude letters is also similarly taped up. a light switch hangs out between them all.

more importantly, as a human, your NATURAL IMPULSE is to read meaning/will/emotion/conscioussness/whatever into that. same reason people “see” faces in clouds, tree bark, burnt toast patterns, etc.

“but NPCs are explicitly programmed that way! nobody TOLD Claude to-“ I’ma stop you right there. LLMs are designed to respond to text inputs with plausible text outputs. considering they were trained on the stolen sum of the entire written creative output of all humanity, DUH. of COURSE they will.

if an NPC in a video game screams when I kill it, does it feel pain? if a particular kill “terrifies” other nearby enemies, does that mean they feel distress? this is the same level of ridiculous.

Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or be able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment. I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this: >>

tbh a lot of places nowadays have moved to QR-code ordering systems anyway, which will mostly auto-translate for you, but then every once in a while you’ll get a place whose menu translates 生 (draught (beer)) into “insufficiently”

like how excel enabled non-tech people to do “database” work, but way worse. at LEAST 1x/week our team gets a bulk request where half of the numeric IDs are garbled because excel converted them to scientific notation & ALSO lost precision on the original numbers so they can’t even be restored 😑

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

This tech is based on stolen labor, then I reject it. This tech intensifies racism, sexism, and class exploitation, then I reject it. This tech exploits workers in the Global South, then I reject it. This tech exacerbates env & climate problems, then I reject it. All these rationales are valid!

Guys, no one doubts that Tesla is responsible if its cars roll down hills and crash into people (or anything else). The problem is that until VERY recently, it was not accepted that it was possible for something on wheels that we forgot to put breaks on to travel downhill at high speed.
