Jason was a great character, very fleshed out in his internal battles and conflicts. Overall, a great, simple read! I’ll be on the lookout for the other two books now. (Also, Butthole Surfers being mentioned was a 10/10 moment 🙂‍↕️)

I *really* enjoyed Kyle’s storyline in particular, especially with how he coexisted kind of in a gray area until he decided to step up; Nelson was somehow hilarious, frustrating and sympathetic, which I enjoyed. And Jason?

The writing was very geared towards tweens and teens (which, after my last read, I was looking forward to) and does a great job of establishing the inner battles that come with being a queer teen in a variety of both supportive and unsupportive environments.

(Also, to the reviewer that comped this to Catcher in the Rye—you’re dead on and don’t let anyone tell you any different. The narrator and Holden are so similar in their meandering and dramatics that the connection actually felt frustrating lol. Can you tell I didn’t enjoy Catcher in the Rye?)

Did I enjoy reading it? Sure, I liked the writing at a line-level and felt it had some interesting, if strange, things to say about a repressed homosexual boy living through the 50s. Would I read it again? Probably not.

The narrator did basically nothing except go along with everyone else’s whims until the very end, when he finally found a stroke of independence (no pun intended). Which is fine. Except spineless narrators are my actual pet peeve and drive me nuts.

Overall, I really, really enjoyed Edmund White’s prose; his sometimes wandering metaphors and lengthy descriptions—while occasionally over the top—were really beautiful and drew super interesting comparisons.
