#GuineaPigDeathSquad4Life I certainly wasn’t the primary instigator of our silver medal - I only knew the answers to questions about Assistive Technology and The Beatles, as I recall… 😬 T’was your good self who knew the atomic number of gold…!

[5/5] Variability in children’s performance on both presentations underlines the risk of assuming fixation or gaze switching skills to be present, and the importance of assessing gaze behaviours in individual children - particularly those expected to use them for communication or computer control.

Dr Tom Griffiths @tg-at.bsky.social · 01/04/2025
[4/5] Eye tracking may be better at recording fixations in children with strabismus, where object-based paradigms may offer more flexible administration for clinicians.
100
Dr Tom Griffiths @tg-at.bsky.social · 01/04/2025
[3/5] Eye tracking may present an “entry barrier” for some children in terms of its accuracy and calibration requirements, but object presentation carries with it the risk of over-interpreting children as having fixated.

Dr Tom Griffiths @tg-at.bsky.social · 01/04/2025
[2/5] Our study compared the use of an eye tracking computer with expert clinician observations of children's fixation and gaze switching. Whilst it is not possible to say which one is better at producing the "correct" result, the differences are interesting and are discussed in this paper.

[1/5] Happy to share our latest #eyegaze #eyetracking research paper, in which we compare computer and object-based approaches to observing fixation and gaze switching in children with #cerebralpalsy. It's #openaccess from @mdpiopenaccess.bsky.social here: www.mdpi.com/2077-0383/14...
A banner for a paper from the Journal of Clinical Medicine. The paper title is "Assessment of Gaze Fixations and Shifts in Children with Cerebral Palsy: A Comparison of Computer- and Object-Based Approaches" and the authors' names (Tom Griffiths; Michael T. Clarke; John Swettenham) are displayed below this, with the journal volume (14), issue number (7) and article number (2326). A QR code to link to the article is in the top right. All are set against a green and white background.

It's basic stuff we teach our students - don't say "many authors agree that...", "there is substantial evidence that..." or "there are hundreds of articles proving..." if you're not going to produce / cite this "vast number" of sources.

I'm afraid it gets worse... there is a "controversy" section but it's relegated to two bullets at the bottom and you have to expand the section to find it...
A screenshot of a Google search with the search bar reading "what is facilitated communication" and the Al Overview reading "Facilitated communication (FC) is a technique that helps people with
communication impairments express themselves. It involves a person
pointing to letters, pictures, or objects, or typing on a keyboard, with the help of a facilitator." A subsequent subheading reads "How it works" before two bullet points reading "The facilitator may physically support the person's hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder" and "The facilitator may also hold up an alphabet chart and encourage the person to touch letters." At this point the text fades out to indicate that the user must expand the section to read more. Two links on the right under the heading "Learn more" lead to a Wikipedia article and a page from "Raising Children Network".
