Tobias Fedder @tfedder.de · 29/09/2026Last day at the office, packing up my stuff. I will miss the whiteboard quote, as well as the a11y poster peeking over my shoulder in video calls. And the cafeteria. 😢 Starting next month: new org, new processes, new workplace, but same tasks, same employer, same team 😊 (mostly). It's complicated. 141
Tobias Fedder @tfedder.de · 26/09/2026There is at least one other reason for (more-than-)valid HTML: not all software consuming your HTML is as clever as the browsers are. Having some knowledge about how browsers parse HTML, earlier versions of my site left out <head> and <body> tags. It broke RSS auto-discovery in some readers. 050
Tobias Fedder @tfedder.de · 26/09/2026When I tried using other length units I had issues with some browsers and atan2(). I wanted to calculate progress in `rem`s of the viewport inline size. Tobias Fedder @tfedder.de · 24/09/2026TIL buttons turn inner nodes presentational. That was great! You scared me a little when you took your time on the <title> in the <svg>. I was afraid I'd been too generous with the aria again. But you added the aria-labelledby in the end. 000
Tobias Fedder @tfedder.de · 23/09/2026Some of that harm is unavoidable when going with masonry for wildly different content. Other stuff like the reading-order property could have been prioritized. Yet, the auto-placement cursor just feels like a mistake. 010
Tobias Fedder @tfedder.de · 22/09/2026So, less from a perspective of: WebComponents, yet you only write CSS; but instead viewing it as a way to use custom-elements only for CSS purposes, avoiding div/span with classes. Yes, having to repeat the <template> for DSD is annoying, and even without repeating it, less portable. Makes sense. 110
Tobias Fedder @tfedder.de · 21/09/2026Great post! @scope really does improve the situation here. It sounds like you would not consider zero JS, custom-element-shaped markup with declarative shadow DOM to be CSS-only custom elements; stating they have no shadow root, therefore no shadow DOM slotting. Any particular reason for that? 110
