One thing waymos really love? Bus stops. It's infuriating. They gum up bus and shuttle schedules all the time in SF.

Yeah, my (extremely non-expert) understanding is that the benefit of the LIDAR system they use is that it's very good at object detection, so they're less likely to hit things than, say, a FSD Tesla. But they are not so good at determining what an object IS.

My understanding is that they don't read signs, they're supposed to be coded with the same rules as the signs. So in theory they're supposed to know not to turn right, but if no one coded that it's a "No right-on-red" intersection, there's no mechanism for them to see the sign and incorporate that.

But these votes didn't accomplish precisely nothing. They moved Republican legislation forward in a way that allows them to make political hay ahead of the midterms, even if meaningful law doesn't result. They also prevented the Republicans from suffering an embarrassing self-inflicted defeat.

Google AI search result for "figure it out", which reads:

Show Overview and Rules

Original Run: Premiered on July 7, 1997, and ran for four seasons until December 12, 1999, hosted by Summer Sanders.

Revival: Returned for two more seasons from June 11, 2012, to July 16, 2013, hosted by Jeff Sutphen.

The Panel: Consisted of four rotating celebrities, typically popular stars from various Nickelodeon shows like All That and Kenan & Kel (such as Danny Tamberelli, Lori Beth Denberg, and Josh Server).

Mamdani says "I should wear a helmet!" This article says, "He said vehicular homicide victims were irresponsible and at fault for their own deaths!" C'mon now.

But if you think my characterization is unfair, okay. I'm sorry it was imprecise. But your original post was lamenting that people will see one statement and pretend it says something egregious. This article pretty indisputably does that!

& rue (they/them) @texpat.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
You said this article presented the "normal take of [fixation on helmets is bad]". I was using your language. But I don't think it's unfair to the article, which says that the video "paints deadly crashes as the failure of vulnerable road users to protect themselves".
130
& rue (they/them) @texpat.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Okay, but that claim comes AFTER the claim "Mamdani has a fixation on helmets to the detriment of advocating for infrastructure investment." Which is actually the premise of the article, and which isn't supported by fact.

I don't necessarily disagree, but also there's a pretty limited extent to which they really are "the same tool". One of the flattenings is the erasure of the diff b/t (un)supervised ML and LLMs. And because of the way funding works, there's a financial incentive to call everything "AI".

(Secondhand) A friend's PI told the lab LLMs let them publish papers faster. That they knew it was bad, but they had to because "everyone else was doing it." (Firsthand) I've seen the deskilling that comes from using LLMs as search engines, brainstorming, and writing tools. And the data analysis...

It's also true that scientists are saying this about wildly varying use cases in science. AlphaFold? Huge breakthrough (now disbanded) But they also use it to brainstorm research methods, write papers, do data analysis, etc. Those use cases are (and should be, imo) much more controversial.

As someone who was in middle and high school in Texas during the Bush years, this is not strange at all for a specific segment of white America. I grant you it's much less common than like, Justin Timberlake fandom was, but they certainly weren't unicorns.

I'm here for the season, and I wish every game was a sell-out, but the vibes are great and they have been reasonably well-attended. State fair in town will help too. Yesterday was packed, today a HUGE storm blew through earlier and rain was forecast for the evening, as we saw in the later innings.

Yeah, iirc they said they want to do games in all the home cities next year, but haven't said anything about format or stadiums yet. My guess would be that it'll be similar to this year - all teams travel together, do a set of games in each of the 4 cities in rented parks.

Haven't seen the Krugman quote, but he would have been referencing Colbert's 2006 WHCD speech: "And reality has a well-known liberal bias."

Enjoy him! When he came to the Giants, people were talking about his low strikeout rate, but it was a very different thing to watch him play every day and realize, oh, he just NEVER strikes out. He'll pop out, he'll ground out, but he does. not. strike. out. And mostly? He hits. And hits.

This is not wrong. I don't know your bullpen super well - if you have a couple of groundball-inducing relievers you can put behind him in case you get Miller scenario number 2, it can work out pretty consistently.

A) "Abolish Prisons" is not a slogan. No one is using it as a slogan. B) "Black Power" is a slogan that was and is wildly unpopular, and has successfully been part of an inside-outside change-making strategy. C) www.google.com/search?q=ins... I'm not doing your homework for you.

That's because the President is the "inside" part of the inside-outside game. It's okay that you don't know how this works. But you should take a second to recognize that there is a whole body of thought and a mountain of historical evidence that you are obviously unfamiliar with.

Setting everything else aside, the idea that the right did not openly advocate for making abortion illegal and punishing women is laughably ahistorical. There is synergy in political movements for some people to push the politically inconvenient stance while others push incrementalism.

Tom's telegraphed, wooden amateurism on display here is expected by anyone who's heard him speak. But Logan should know enough about the form to not simultaneously flinch and brace himself for it. And to then no-sell the slap afterwards... It's an insult to everyone involved.

I'm so sorry, this was my life so recently. My son was a total velcro baby, hated the crib, wouldn't even do the side sleeper we attached to our bed. Had to be on someone in the recliner. We cracked when he was 5mo, did full cry it out for two weeks and then Ferber method. Now he sleeps great.

The most destructive kind of McKinsey-brain, where someone misses the point of something and decides it doesn't need to exist.
Screenshot of an article, which reads:

“I came to (Jim Sinegal) once and I said, ‘Jim, we can’t sell this hot dog for a buck fifty. We are losing our rear ends.’ And he said, ‘If you raise the effing hot dog, I will kill you. Figure it out.’

This is about messaging. Nuremberg is synonymous with "trial for crimes against humanity" in the American popular consciousness. No one using this phrase is talking about copying the exact process, and no one who hears it thinks that they are.
