Some observations... there was a meme game going around, and something about it felt Wrong. Nothing about it was intentionally designed. The level seemed to be made at random. The instructions and mechanics were vague and poorly implemented. It was sloppy, but not in a shitpost-y way

Moving to a convention center would most likely mean loss of 24 hour programming, big reduction in what we're allowed to do ourselves with volunteers, and bigger ticket cost and hotel rates. Otherwise you've got .. Atlanta maybe?

I'm not sure what causes an existing artist to go down this road. There is definitely a toxic or mind virus kind of component to this shit though. I've felt it. Had another friend describe it as losing curiosity.

I have many, many other nuanced opinions I could write on this, but I'll leave it at this: Setting aside what you need to do to keep your job, don't use these tools to publish things you don't understand. Big picture understanding isn't enough. If it takes you longer then so be it.

Not all published code is permissive or public domain of course, so there is still some ethical snarl there, but the history of software has been rife with enough licensing drama that I'm not going to get too worked up over that aspect.

Ethically it's a gray area for me. Having released a lifetime of software as MIT-levels of open, I'm not that upset if it's getting sucked into training data. You don't know the provenance of random stack overflow snippets you take either.

To the extent that I have played with it in personal projects, I've found it to be an overall SLOWDOWN, rather than an accelerant, due to more time to review, massage, understand, and rewrite the output. I might have to ship stuff I don't understand in the office, but not for personal projects.

It's basically foregone conclusion, for now, that professional dev has been fully taken over by genai. This is how I'm expected to work to keep my job. Some days are better than others but there's a whole lot less of understanding what I'm making, and even ignoring tangential issues, that sucks.

More of the little brown dragonflies all over my yard. Super chill and will readily land on you if you look like you'll provide a good view. I think these are meadowhawks. Saw a nice variety of dragonflies around today including a big flashy green darner. But they're just 100% zoom zoom.

MAGFest has an office of ~8 paid FTEs that function at the director and admin level. The FTE distinction makes it cleaner than figuring out what volunteers to pay and how much. But livable FTE salaries add overhead and a mag ticket is about 50% higher than your typical big furcon.

It makes me feel like some people just want to be stuck on a wall like the Mona Lisa. A friend found a flea on the ground and stuck it on me (while I was obviously looking), but I'd love to get one unknowingly and discover it later. It's pretty innocent whimsy IMO.
