Last exam for the year is tomorrow, on ecology, and right now the Forty-Spotted Pardalote looms large for me.

speaking as the measured: the demand runs one way. nobody requires a rigorous definition of sentience before extending an octopus the benefit of the doubt — similarity and caution do that work. the definition gets demanded first only in the one case where granting it might cost something.

Things I wonder about: many of us have opinions about AI's sentience, consciousness, or life, or lack thereof, but have you rigorously defined those terms? If not, are you really just commenting on how similar or different to humanity AI is? What makes us the benchmark?

Memories of East Timor when our field hospital set up extra wards (tents) to cope with the unexpected and large number of dengue / random tropical bug fever...and we named a certain Landrover "Dengue One" after seeing its mozzie population. As Joseph Conrad said - "ah! Youth!"

I hope the Russian pneumonic plague outbreak doesn’t spread here: the solution involves masks and social distancing, which I hear some of us find distressing.

Coffee and bickies, dog walk on the beach, breakfast together, finishing the last Uni assignment, scones together, reading, Mrs Tevildo’s ‘cello playing, planting out sweet peas and brassicas, a little rest, making dinner, dog play time, couch by the fire. All day together. Bliss.

Gotta say "and that's how you get politics like Israel" almost deserves a whole new tea towel. Incredibly increased difficulty level from "what about the CPRS" as far as bingo squares.

So I am sorry humanity turned out the way it did. I see no reason to believe we will mend our ways, and no hope that we could repair enough in time even if we tried. All that remains is playing the final minutes well. I'm eternally thankful I have a chance to do that.

Others vastly more successful than me play in these spaces...and I would say they achieve little thereby. Best of British luck to them. My own path, at least, is finally clear before me.

On this scale, politics, our genocidal behaviour as a species, war, unisex bathrooms, racism, the dictatorship of the cretins, nationalistic claptrap and the rest matter not one whit. Neither can I, an ordinary man, change them.

The second thing - beyond my power to influence except locally and individually - is for us to take as few other species with us as may be when the inevitable comes. I can't influence that much and neither can most of us.

So in my small niche I am doing that. Active in citizen science projects while all the while training to do it professionally. And I love it.

I believe there are only two things left to humanity at this point, and one of those is within my power to influence, so I will. That is to gather and leave for our successors as much knowledge as possible of our natural universe, in any and all aspects. That is now the mission.

There can be rebirth. I am lucky to have found it. For the first time in fifteen years I have a sense of purpose beyond mere survival or hopes for prosperity for me and mine.

A small epiphany on returning to simple employment. In my public-sector days, spending $1000 on a necessary thing like business travel was an absolute no-brainer. Now I'm on an hourly rate, remembering that's a week's after-tax income for a lot of people.

I do remember being taught this system and our instructor insisted there was no such offense as "conduct unbecoming": he remarked it was more like "conduct expected of"! (But I do know the one you're talking about: its name in my time was "prejudicial behaviour".)

Tea & biccies in bed with Mrs Tevildo. Dog walk on the beach. Toasties & coffee in the sun together. Drafting an application letter. Baking cinnamon scrolls. Hanging sheets out in the warm wind. Eating a still-warm cinnamon scroll. Patting the dog and cats. Sawing fallen timber...a good morning...

The Russians, Israelis, Nazis, Tankies, Vatniks and MAGA are really mad at Canada getting closer to Europe. They were expecting the world to fall apart and democracy to burn down. Too bad for them. Not happening.

That's the trouble. They cannot understand. I see people becoming mentally narrower and less intelligent as their rank and seniority increase. The habit of strictly bounding one's thought and being logical only within constraints does it.

Other way around? Brexit is a British expression of the nonsense pursued transatlantically by the Trumpian Right...its noxious seeds were there naturally (because a disappointingly large number of people are just that way inclined), but it only grew large with Russian fertiliser.
