i have an idea for how to do paths for these in the actual game- instead of linear roads, you place points of interest around them. other buildings, the road points along the edges, etc.. then you organically run a net of paths between all of these. they'll end up going through every which way.

No, no and no. These weren't "rogue AIs" -- what happened here is that OpenAI kicked off a software process and let it run. OpenAI was always in control and could have stopped the process (or actually paid attention to what it was doing) at any time. >>
