18 UK restaurant chains have broken their promise to improve chicken welfare. It’s estimated that 50 million chickens will suffer every year as a result, from issues like heart disease, lameness, & skin lesions. Please tell KFC to #GoForSlow: bit.ly/3RpWDX0

Recent headlines claimed organic eggs are "worse for the environment" but this missed the bigger picture. We need a food system that supports both animals & the planet. That means farming fewer animals, raising them to higher welfare standards, & producing food more sustainably.

A group of chickens in a field with a text overlay. The overlay includes a quote from The Guardian, July 2026, about the environmental impact of organic eggs compared to caged chickens. A thumbs down icon and a text reading "But here's what the headline missed" are also included.

A group of chickens stand over several brown eggs in straw. The text reads: "The study looked at what might happen if all UK egg production switched to organic free-range systems. It found that this could increase some environmental impacts per egg."

Caged hens are densely packed in wire enclosures. Text on the image reads: "But that doesn't mean we should keep hens in cages. Animal welfare and sustainability shouldn't be a choice between one or the other."

A graphic with text reading, "The real challenge is our food system. We need to: Farm fewer animals, raise them to higher welfare standards, produce food in ways that work with nature." Features images of a cow and a chicken.

Yet Westminster governments of all colours have so far refused!

Thank you so much! I did a lot of research before and while writing, to honour the experience of the women on the home front, and the returning veterans - as much as it's possible to do that at over 100 years' distance. I loved weaving historical military and social facts into the narrative.
